talked to peter w. at astralwerks today and i have found out why the u-ziq my little beautiful cd5 hasnt surfaced. it has been export banned for u.s sale. astralwerks has the rights to put it out but decided they didnt want to at this point. they made it impossible(or supposed to be) to bring it in the country for loss of sales down the road. i have been told that it is possible that they may put that out with another single down the line so for the time being, you may have to buy these from overseas dealers or people sneaky enough to break the ban. we are not that sneaky pj -- pj>the exalted grand puba of mail order modern music 2905 o'donnell st, baltimore, md. 21224 fon: 410.675.2172 fax: 410.675.2373 www.modernmusic.com

this whole concept makes no sense to me. what are the consequences from selling cds or records that are export banned? jail time? steep fines? the whole thing seem ridiculous - are you gonna throw people in the clink for wanting to listen to a mikey p cd. funk that. please explain - why would anyone go along with this stupidity? _____ / ,-,_) /,_) (/ RESH Live & Direct from the G-Spot, Orange County, California, USA http://www1.linkonline.net/fresh/fresh.htm

I was wondering about this over the weekend. How could anyone prevent someone buying such a CD mail order from a company in a country where it had already been released? It seems to me that GATT would probably want to hear about such occurrences.

Depends. Selling import copies of something that a US label has the distro rights to opens you up to prosecution under US copyright law, so presumably there could be jail time for particularly egregious offenders. More likely they'll just fine the shit out of you and confiscate everything you own under the RICO laws . . .

Go ahead and import lots of copies of the single, sell them to lots of people, and send Astralwerks and the US Attorney's office a nice "I'm doing this whether you like it or not and fuck you" letter and maybe you'll get to find out. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ::: Internet Music Wantlists: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo/Wantlists

I was in England two weeks ago, and bought my copy of "My Little Beautiful" at Virgin. Had I known there was an import band, I would have bought copies for IDM'ers. Virgin had at least 30 in stock. I love the e.p. It's noisy, and melodious. Well worth checking out! Paul Rafanello intone@warwick.net

I don't think that's what anyone's talking about. As far as I know there's no law to prevent you from mail-ordering copies for yourself -- you only get in trouble if you import copies for resale. (GATT *does* recognize the concept of copyrights, right?) -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ::: Internet Music Wantlists: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo/Wantlists

I mentioned GATT here thinking they would not approve of people being prohibited from mail ordering things from other countries. Sorry, reading it now it doesn't seem very clear. If there is no restriction on mail orderging things then it seems that either people don't want to spend the extra money, don't have a credit/debit card or don't want to pay extra for a bank draft or some other reason I haven't thought of. Just checked Pastel Blue in the UK and they would mail order it to the US for US$20.41 or UKP 12.38. This may be a lot for people in the US, 12.38 isn't unusual in the UK for a new CD. BTW I don't work for Pastel Blue nor have I used them (though I'm planning on trying them out when I get my finances sorted) so bear this in mind. Hope this widens peoples options a bit, if not sorry to be a bother.
