Rafael Toral -- Sound Mind, Sound Body (Moikai)
i just picked this up today and thought i'd drop a quick recommendation.
this is probably more appropriately discussed on the ambient list, but i
know there's some overlap so i figured i'd go ahead. toral's "sound mind,
sound body," reissued by jim o'rourke's moikai label this week, is
guitar-based melodic ambient -- expansive, engulfing, and just out and out
gorgeous. fans of the more placid of the pete namlook/tetsu inoue
collaborations on fax (specifically, "62 eulengasse" and "2350 broadway 3,"
particularly the latter) should run right out and get this. for those put
off by that comparison, toral's use of the guitar also delivers a distinct
take on the droning layers approach of the "fax sound," primarily in terms
of the edginess of toral's guitar. it's a subtle difference, but it really
does contribute a lot. another comparison i'd make is to the more minimal
of eno's ambient works (parts of "apollo," for instance, or "the shutov
assembly").
