Buy this album. If you're into Autechre and U-Ziq, you'll appreciate the
distorted beats and sometimes gritty, sometimes metallic textures. If
you're a fan of Speedy J's earlier stuff (G-Spot, Ginger), you really owe
it to yourself to see how his style has developed. Here's a review I wrote
a little while ago:
Speedy J - public energy no. 1 (plus8 records)
This album is a killer. Don't expect the same trance and Detroit
influenced Speedy J you might be used to, if you're familiar with his
previous material. Instead, Jochem Paap decided to get down, dirty, and
funky with this album. Comparisons have been made and will be made to
Aphex Twin and Autechre, since the majority of the album has similarly
twisted, metallic, and distorted beats that those two are associated with.
But Speedy's work is different - it's sort of industrial-based funk
(industrial in the original sense, of machines that control and shape our
lives, not synth+guitar+screaming industrial). Best appreciated when
headphones are utilized, one of the album's best features is its flow.
From the beatless and noisy intro "Tuning in", through the majestic
"Patterns" to the pair of tracks "Haywire" and "Hayfever", to the ending
"As the Bubble expands", Jochem Paap has created an album that moves
beautifully. As I mentioned, headphones are a must - the production
quality of the entire thing is great. Listening to the way the different
sounds he manages to squeeze out of his gear interact with one another,
it's easy to proclaim this a great album.
Hope this helps,
