There are no norms. Some people mail out as soon as they receive the check.
Some wait for it to clear, which normally takes a week for out-of-state
checks. Some hatch eggs on the goods for a month. This sort of thing should be
settled between the buyer and the seller - there are lots of individual
factors that come into play.
I, for example, work long hours. The only time I can make it to the
post office is at lunch, when there are super-long queues and waiting times
of as much as 20 minutes (which, for the most part, I cannot afford). I am also
occasionally out of town. In general, when I sell stuff, I do my best to
stick to the ship-within-a-week ideal, but sometimes complications come up
and I am forced to wait until I can lumber over to the PO near my home over
the weekend. (Conversely, I frequently send out stuff to people I've dealt with
before or who "feel right" before I've even received the money.)
My general philosophy: Chill out and assume that most people aren't scam
artists, and don't get all antsy if you don't hear from your trading partner
for a few days. And if you're really queasy, exchange phone numbers; it's
shaky insurance, but it's better than nothing.
