All this talk of trading troubles got me wondering. Just what is considered acceptable in terms of time between getting money and shipping product, notification about shipping dates, time to wait before you're sure its going badly etc? Perhaps we should lay it out so people know what to expect. For instance is waiting one month after your check was deposited and still hearing no word that money was recieved and getting no records/communication acceptable? I would figure you should ship out no more more than a week after payment, and emailing the day you do it to be the norm. Anything above that is slacking pure and simple. Other opinions? -- Mark Edward Bowen Warmed Breakdown mb@gettins.bche.uic.edu

There are no norms. Some people mail out as soon as they receive the check. Some wait for it to clear, which normally takes a week for out-of-state checks. Some hatch eggs on the goods for a month. This sort of thing should be settled between the buyer and the seller - there are lots of individual factors that come into play. I, for example, work long hours. The only time I can make it to the post office is at lunch, when there are super-long queues and waiting times of as much as 20 minutes (which, for the most part, I cannot afford). I am also occasionally out of town. In general, when I sell stuff, I do my best to stick to the ship-within-a-week ideal, but sometimes complications come up and I am forced to wait until I can lumber over to the PO near my home over the weekend. (Conversely, I frequently send out stuff to people I've dealt with before or who "feel right" before I've even received the money.) My general philosophy: Chill out and assume that most people aren't scam artists, and don't get all antsy if you don't hear from your trading partner for a few days. And if you're really queasy, exchange phone numbers; it's shaky insurance, but it's better than nothing. Ashok

This wasn't my train of thought whatsoever until recently when I sent off money for the Plug 1&2 dl. pack (anyone remember sending me mail asking to buy my Plug 1 and having me tell them I didn't want to sell it until I had the Plug 1&2 in hand? Glad I did that... very glad =) Anyways, the guy either traded it or sold it to someone else, but, not only did he promptly send my money back, but he also sent me back a bitching mixed tape made up of mostly FAX material (which I actually was wondering about quite a bit right about then =) It was dissappointing that the deal went back (very much so because he didn't actually tell me what was up, sort of sent it back and a mail telling me to let him know when I got the 'package') but I thought it was cool enough to actually get my $ back, let alone a great tape to boot... anyways... made me feel a whole lot better about people in general (there I was previously thinking everyone sucked...) hmmm... guess no one needed to hear that story, huh? __________________________________________ brap@sonic.net *** sfwd@sonic.net http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ http://www.sonic.net/~brap/dot/ Dot Information Center http://www.sonic.net/~brap/gpo/ The Hardcore Outdated GPO Page stress and bad phonelines... the story of my life
