greetings just back from a holiday so here is a.. [review] btw the new mike p lp is gonna knock you all for six - review soooooooonnnnnn; squarepusher - big loada 12" (warp wap 92) on this 7 (yes count em!) track ep, tom [rightly] seems to be “cocking a snook” at the sycophantic worshippers of the amen break who proclaim that his music is “not [real] drum n bass”, and even more incrediously “you can’t dance to it” well..as the irdial slogan goes “there are too many fools following too many rules”, and unlike the wafer thin drum n bass legions tom j is not one of em. as with 'vic acid', tom’s muso tendencies (as displayed on hard normal daddy) have taken a back seat to be replaced by a motorway pile-up of chaotic rhythm & compressed melodies, not content with tearing up england's breakbeat byways, tom is now streaking down the autobhan at well in excess of 180bpm, the whole experiance reminds me of childhood hours spent spinning records round with your finger to see how they sound at extremely fast speeds, you know..the chipmunk effect. do it with an ed rush 12” and you are half way towards a ‘big loada’ it’s best to lie back and watch the whole thing streeeeeeaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkk by, sonicly propulsed towards it’s destination like a freshly unleashed attack dog, the 7 selections batter you into submission with twitching hyperactive synth lines replacing slabbering jaws and honey soaked melodies providing the only light relief choice cut has to be ‘tequila fish’ a spazzed out jazzucial escape, play any miles davis record circa on the corner’ backwards, add some lounge lizard textures, a mercurial hip hop sample and voila, the pusher has appeared fun stuff, will annoy the purists even more (which i am all for), but the question has to be asked “a big loada” what?
