Yeah it rocks! Best scratching I've ever heard. He gave a friend a copy when he was in Seattle a few months ago and for a month we insisted on playing the tape to everyone who came over. The best part is the Charlie Brown stuff. But I won't give that away, you'll just have to listen to it. Cid.

A lot of the stuff he scratches seem to be samples, and it got me wondering exactly how this is done - surely the source material must be on vinyl, or can it be done digitally now... ? (excuse my ignorance)< I saw Kid Koala at the latest Stealth Tour that passed thru the Troubadour here in la, and he was great and pretty damn humble too. I have to say he was one of the highlights of the show. He was the only one who actually looked liked he was enjoying himself, everyone else looked bored shitless. I don't know what else he's put out, but i'd recommend picking up anything you can find. The 10" is the only thing out right now. It is basically most of his demo tape but we cleaned up the sound quality on it. It's promo only and seriously limited (but like any in demand promo some find there way into shops). He has a remix on the upcoming Coldcut 'Beats and Pieces' 12", and is currently working on tunes with Money Mark for his first Ninja 12" release. He's a swell guy, a damn good DJ, and contrary to popular belief he's 22 not 16.

All scratches and compositions are done live off 2 decks to a 4 track. He went back in after and added some of the samples (ie. ones without scratching), but 90% of the release is done live in 1 take. As for source material for some of the scratches, he (like most scratch dj's) has some plates cut with all his favourite samples.

dance, man, dance. The problem with the last show is that everyone just stared at the stage all night. It's a party, not a concert. Get naked, dance on the speaker, be a fool, it's not always serious. It's not that we were 'bored shitless', we were just freaked out at everyone watching our every move (especially industry types "so this is that there next big thing they call electronica, hmmmm just sounds like hip-hop with no lyrics"...duh!). Koala is the only one that can respond to that as he has that DJ battle showman ethic. We're working on it, we never wanted to be rock stars, we just want someone to pay for us to tour so that we can buy more records in different cities. It's all just a laugh really. Stealthy, Not Stodgy Ninjas< I totally agree with you, the place looked liked a rock concert, i was actually waiting for the bic-lighter serenade. i was dancing, my friend was dancing and maybe a handful of others but that's about it. i have to say i've noticed that at more and more shows these days. it sucks! and i'm not sure why. probably the burgeoning "electronica" craze seeping into the mainstream. -- qrux@anet.net qrux@boss.com
