Someone mentioned the band/artist boymerang as a suggestion for jungle. Does anyone know anything about boymerang? I heard it is the new project of one of the members of the former band bark psychosis. Since I deeply mourn the music world's loss of bark psychosis I am very interested in anything anyone knows about current releases of former members, especially what boymerang has released on which label and where I could get it. Oh yeah, and what it sounds like (telling me it is jungle means nothing to me). Thanks, Kristina Clair kclair@sas.upenn.edu -- "I can't even be bothered Energy breaks me down." -The Charlatans

Hi, I don't know if Boymerang is a project of someone from Bark Psychosis, but I did pick up a Boymerang 12" a week or two ago on Prototype records 2 tracks..."Still" is pretty amazingly calculated breakbeats, loud and with a fat bassline that's, well, kind of very good and dark. "Urban Space" on the AA side is much more ambient, still got the breaks but there are some nice effects in there, robot voices and an interesting tune. Well I think you should get it. bye -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions

Hi, The artist in question is Graham Sutton (formerly of Bark Psychosis)... His Boymerang project is a super futuristic drum'n'bass outfit who is presently in the middle of some pretty big bidding wars amongst some top UK labels. He has two excellent 12"s out on Leaf Records, a new 12" on Prototype, and is featured as a remixer on the new Sufi (former A.R. Kane member Rudy Tambala's new project) 12", and on the new O'rang (former Talk Talk members latest outing - are we following the trend here?) 12". He also appears on Lo Recordings' first two compilations and on an upcoming compilation on Blue Planet (also feat. Plug, Witchman, Bowling Green...). A new 12" on Metalheadz and the debut full length will be surfacing later this year. Enjoy! L.B.

Just imagine dancefloor friendly breakbeats(read: used to death by mainstream junglists like metalheadz et al) but with more interesting idm-ish textures and instrumentation over the top(doesn't say much, does it? :)). I think its an ok album, but was kinda dissapointed because he had done better stuff before like the MLO remix and the contributions to the LO recording compilations. Phei Wee

I got wagon christ's "redone ep" (on rising high records), it has remixes by aphex twin, voafose & boymerang. I guess the last track "pull my strings (oven baked mix)" is by voafose & boymerang, and I must admit, it's really cool! it's pretty junglish, beautiful chords and a nice melody. I don't usually listen to jungle at all, but this is one of those tracks that I really like :) haven't heard anything else from boymerang tho. -- .Mikko

Yesirree bobtails! And in heavy rotation on my @work headphones! I can't keep d&b genre's straight, but this record is smooth, jazzy without getting cheesy, and more to the get-in-a-groove vein than in the random twittery breaks vein. EXTREMELY well produced. A joy to listen to. This and Amon Tobin are what I currently consider the bomb as far as drum and bass goes. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Psyche manifests as psychic through something we call 'winding', because it twists, and puts things that were far apart next to each other, complicatedly, taffywise." -- winona on channel 78 Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

We just did a short review of it on our webpage, with cover art (inside the interesting silver cover). Here's the text of it: Boymerang- "Balance of Force" (Regal) CD $21.99 2XLP $20.99 Graham Sutton (Former member of the Prog. Rock group Bark Psychosis) comes on strong with his first full-length album of intelligent Drum 'n Bass. After label jumping from Metalheadz, Prototype, and Leaf and remixing just about everyone who's anyone in the D 'n B scene, Boymerang saves us his best cuts for his own album. "Balance of Force" is a definite trip into the vast styles of D 'n B. Tech-step, Jump-up, Dark-step and what ever else sub-genre labeling their is in Drum 'n Bass is represented in this album. What makes this even more unique, is that Graham has taken elements from his former outfit and brought that spatial and eclectic blend to Drum 'n Bass. Fans of LTJ BUKEM to ED RUSH and NICO to PLUG will enjoy this album. I'm glad to see that there is still creativity coming out of the D 'n B scene. Worth every penny. I agree. Two ace techstep tracks in a No U-Turn sort of style, a handful of interesting breaks and textures, and many, many long minutes of the same break looping over and over again. There not much going on melodically and most tracks never really evolve or develop beyond their original themes. It's not a bad album, but there's not much to distinguish it from the rest of the pack. Jungle seems to me to be completely ripe with amazing possibilities, mostly still unrealized. The prize goes to the first album that's consistently as good as the first two tracks on Drum & Bass for Papa. Scooper's recommendation of the si-{cut}.db album is right on the money and is probably the best available remedy for all of us who want so badly for jungle to grow up. Miles

i'd like to interject another opinion. it's best album released this year so far! well, along with the ones by Florence and Carl Craig.. :) mr Cooper thanx for the tip. _________ si-{cut}.db - Behind you - CD - Surburbs of Hell - SOH SP 025 If the Artificial Intelligence series of Warp needed a follow-up this could be the one. Somewhere between The Black Dog towards T Power, Douglas Benford makes very atmospheric beautiful music, whereas Scanner does the production. Complex but fresh beats combined with deep beautiful strings, synths and fine basses. Nine tracks, and also two done in a remix by Robin Rimbaud, together very fast forward into the surrealistic future. Surely one of the beauties for '97 and beyond! Delicious. speaking of this album, i've been listening to it alot lately. it really is quite good...not so much in it's musical complexity but more in it's mindset. its not an album i would sit and analyze (i will if anyone is interested), but when played, it kinda has a way of evoking images of post-millennial urban landscapes and the like. needless to say, the overall feel is 'soothing', but not in the ambient sense. it has this optimistic (and please don't confuse this with 'happy') mood throughout - even in the darker tunes, perhaps gained through the periodic juxtaposition of simultaneous major and minor key melodies....often occurring in the rhythmic elements as well as the melodic. also, the album does display multiple facets of the dnb spectrum and it does it fairly well. if anyone is interested in a tune by tune review (if it hasn't been presented already) let me know. |_-.| np.boymerang.botf.lazarus

I think he means that it inspires visions, there's nothing wrong with that, try it sometime :) on another note, anyone interested in hearing some of the IDM sounds coming from the demoscene should check out ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/music/artists/dune/bstates-origami-live97.mp3 for some really great music. This is of a live gig (those familiar with the demoscene may know them) Dune/Orange, Yolk/CNCD and Legend/Parallax did at a party in Finland called Abduction. I am not sure if it is a streamable MP3. You could check www.scene.org. This is also for Chris Graves who wanted a copy of this, I thought others may be interested as well. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ www.freq-div.home.ml.org
