Agreed that he has the courage of his own convictions. Can't say that I
really agree with them. As I said in my original post, I do like his
music, on the whole. Sometimes he's rather boring but when he gets it
right it can be wonderful.

I don't see what 'television' has to do with it. That was certainly not
the point I was making. I've seen several Hirst 'pieces' and they were
awful. Ten out of ten for bravado and for manipulating the media (I'm
thinking primarily of the Art establishment in London here). Three out of
ten for artistic merit. I side with Brian Sewell against the likes of
Sarah Kent who champion Hirst et al.
Mainstream media attention did not alter the essential vacuousness of
Hirst's vision, in as much as he has such a thing. The bloke who squirted
the ink into the dead sheep 'piece' exhibited more radicalism/subversion in
that one act than Hirst will in his entire career.

Isn't it the other way around? He's probably of much more interest as a
person than as an artist.

He's not alone in sounding weak compared to Balil. Others have made the
point that DeGiorgio lacks originality, which is to some extent true.
However, you can still be good without being original. There are
sufficient really good tracks on all the As One albums for me not to regret
having bought them.
