Submerge serves as a great example of how well things work when you get the "little" things right, like: - maintaining a significant back catalog, doing represses of things that are in demand, and providing a convenient way of getting them out to consumers (eg. the SID store and mailorder operation) - maintaining the careful balance between artistic and fiscal viability (i.e. pressing adventurous stuff but also keeping an eye on the bread and butter releases that pay the rent) - actually paying people what they're owed (this is a biggie) - providing logistical help/support to small labels / artists that show promise of having their shit together (c.f. Electrofunk, Teknotika, etc.) - presenting a "united front" and avoiding the scene-y/clique-y backbiting that sinks so many musical enterprises -- not everyone in Detroit always sees eye to eye with the guys at Submerge but I think it's safe to say nearly everyone respects what they've done and appreciates the effort, and disputes are resolved in a professional manner -d.w. not affiliated w/Submerge, just a satisfied customer
