more about canada, folks..
The event was in the "ukrainian peoples center", a large
three storey building in downtown toronto. The place was
full of people out for a good time. Not with the detached
cool, folded arms, but willing to CONTRIBUTE in making the
night special. Raising the cone of power. Stacey pullen and
the psychic warriors ov gaia were there too, though sadly,
scheduling precluded me from checking out what they were
doing. I was playing upstairs, ya see. People that *did*
see them said they were great, really good sets. It was
like a rainforest in there when PWoG were on apparently.
I'm not going to review my own performance. suffice to
say most of it was new material, and there was *so much
sub* that peoples water bottles and kidneys were scooting
everywhere. Some people in the corner even fell over.
This was also the first time that frenzied conga playing
from yours truly was in full effect. I thought i'd broken
a thumb at one point.
The real stars of the evening were the local talent. An awesome
technothreesomeinthemouldofkraftwerk totally blew the minds of
everyone when their technicoloured spider dancer burst out into
the middle of the strobe. I've never anything so wicked! This
is what a contemporary kraftwerk *could* be. *and* it made two
fat bears having a fight look sad. (grin). Sadly, I was so
off my face by that time, I can't remember their name, but it
was LIVE in a way that you don't see in europe. There were
other bands on the other floors, and some *deep* jungle in
the basement.
At 3am (eternal), the live tabla troupe came on. a whole bunch
of percussionists and synth players that elevated the entire
building to another level with their beautiful polychromatic riffs
and chanting. I went outside for some air, and all the glass in the
windows was pulsing rthymically. bwoop boop de doop. sadly SNaFU,
the god of gremlins entered, in the form of 'malicious feedback',
and they couldn't play as long as they (and we) wanted. Spirituality
& machine beats skillfully intertwined.
The event swang between the 'white lodge' and 'black lodge'
all evening, giving everybody the best of both worlds..
Last up, as dawn was breaking was DJ ASI and DJ TesT
a combo using CD mixers and yer traditional technics
& vinyl. the interplay of those two was phoenomenal.
they played for three hours and were utterly brilliant.
the best mixing (and mix) i've heard for ages. it went
everywhere, and covered everything. if you book DJ's,
book *them*
Everybody was beautiful, I didn't meet *one* arsehole.
(even when i looked in the mirror). Oh yeah, and the
police...they had complaints on the hour, every hour
all night, but two of them just breezed up and asked
us to "shut some windows please". calm and as pleasant
as if it was some drunk with a home stereo.
If we'd been in the UK, the sound system could have been
confiscated, and everybody 'nicked' for disturbing the
peace. funny old world, isn't it.
plastikman's 0.0002 of what's going on over there.
try 'whitelodge@ca' for info.
Cheers..
