I've recived a lot of requests for a track listing and info on this comp.... there's no detailed info given as its a bootleg and I'm sure whoever made it dont want any trouble so everything's purty anonymous. The name of the comp is 99 records - greatest hits - the garage years and upon closer examination all the tracks are either by esg or liquid liquid. This copy came from fat cat in london so you might want to ask them about it....maybe they can track another one down for you. track listing is: Ufo - esg scrapper - liquid liquid moody - esg rubbermiro - liquid liquid esg - esg groupmegroup - liquid liquid lock groove (in) - " " lock groove (out) - " " standing in line - esg bellhead - liquid liquid cavern - esg rubbermiro - liquid liquid

Doh! Forgot about Liquid Liquid ... they cut 2 12" EPs for 99 Records that I know of in '81 ...

I remember John Peel playing Favorite Sweater from this - a very fine song. No doubt enhanced in his book by the fact of it's being a seven-inch. Liquid Liquid also featured, I think. After a proper listen I've decided that the new Biosphere album is very good indeed. You'll be disappointed if you expect anything resembling the upbeat numbers from the last one. In fact there are hardly any beats at all (not a problem for me). There's even a bit of singing/talking and some relaxed guitar strumming (heavily chorussed, of course). Lots of environmental noise/ambience etc. I thought the more trancey tracks of his earlier release were much less successful on the whole so I'm pleased with this apparent new direction. It's brooding without being as hermetic as much of what I'm forced to refer to as dark ambient. The new Cristian Vogel is also good but I haven't listened much yet. Kirk Degiorgio is interviewed in this month's Wire and comes across as still maintaining the level of arrogance evinced previously. Still like his music though. What can he mean, kids, when he refers to Aphex and Squarepusher as tokens of 'Perverse Modernity' similar to Damien Hirst? Who would credit it etc. Hirst is something of a charlatan, but there's no need to slur James and Jenkinson with that tag. adam

that's a shame, i quite like being perverse and modern i mean let's face it, kirk degiorgio doesn't like artists that don't sound like himself! it's got to be 'his' sound and 'his' idea, and anything that falls out of his sphere of influence hasn't got any soul. he's a loudmouth, but at least he doesn't lick anyone's arse. and i love his records, so there

like most good musicians hirst is someone who produces something good to look at or listen to.. but he isnt the sort of person youd probably want to meet or go to the pub with!! As for kirk degiorgio, he has always come across to me as being 'second rate detroit', hes made some really nice records (amalia on art is absolutely lush), but most of his stuff is boring... and i do like subtle music! whenever hes alongside balil or b12 or whoever on art he always sounds pretty poor. -- k.F

Agreed that he has the courage of his own convictions. Can't say that I really agree with them. As I said in my original post, I do like his music, on the whole. Sometimes he's rather boring but when he gets it right it can be wonderful.

I don't see what 'television' has to do with it. That was certainly not the point I was making. I've seen several Hirst 'pieces' and they were awful. Ten out of ten for bravado and for manipulating the media (I'm thinking primarily of the Art establishment in London here). Three out of ten for artistic merit. I side with Brian Sewell against the likes of Sarah Kent who champion Hirst et al. Mainstream media attention did not alter the essential vacuousness of Hirst's vision, in as much as he has such a thing. The bloke who squirted the ink into the dead sheep 'piece' exhibited more radicalism/subversion in that one act than Hirst will in his entire career.

Isn't it the other way around? He's probably of much more interest as a person than as an artist.

He's not alone in sounding weak compared to Balil. Others have made the point that DeGiorgio lacks originality, which is to some extent true. However, you can still be good without being original. There are sufficient really good tracks on all the As One albums for me not to regret having bought them. adam
