I have to say that I'm a very big fan of Jake Mandell's drum'n'bass/electro type
stuff on Worm Interface, Lucky Kitchen, Carpark, Pitchcadet, Beta Bodega,
Primedeep... I think that covers it all ;) All that stuff.
And I find Quondam Current relentlessly boring and annoying. The techno beats
are just... techno beats I guess, four kicks and some other unswung unfunky
percussion around it, and the weird plinky plonky sounds and alien harmonies of
Jake's that are so interesting and absorbing in his d'n'b stuff here just add to
the annoyingness of the whole vibe.
I've tried _very hard_ to get into this CD, because I really love his other
work. But it's just a style that I really don't like, and the fact that it's
Jake Mandell doesn't seem to make any difference.
That's just MY OPINION. However, I feel that anyone else who's not into what
tends to be called "4/4 techno" or "4/4 house" or whatever should be warned that
they may not like it just because it's Jake. Give it a listen first is my
verdict.
Cheers,
Peter.
