hello! i would be interested in hearing people's anecdotes and internal experiences of how they arrive at an opinion about a particular album or a piece of music (specific to the genres that would tend to be discussed on this list, of course). i would prefer to steer clear of "it just sounds good" or "it just moves me" type of stuff--these are definitely legitimate responses but they tend to be conclusive and don't really tell me anything about the processes behind the conclusions. in my own experience, thinking about hearing a recording for the first time often helps me retrace how i came to form an opinion of it. you may have more useful methods. also, feel free to qualify this for particular pieces of music, genres, artists, etc. the reason i ask is because i'm starting to put some notes together for a possible article/essay on the "semantic logic" of music (with a focus on electronic music) and i think i could really benefit from this group's stories, as many tend to be a bit more cerebral and self-conscious in their listening. thanks! (oh, and be sure and reply privately unless you think others would be interested.) sc p.s. i apologize if people think this is really stupid and boring...
