v/a: FIVE Sabotage Recordings 20 1997 Beanfield: The laboratory of Dr. BJ Harris EPY: Open Farmers Manual: Ulan Bator Bluish: Speaker Alois Huber: Onotut Def Con: Lima-Victor Sluta Leta: Fonk Fonk Fonk Pita: Untitled Pomassl: Atto DFTK: Satan's Tool A. Burger: Device F Rhacoon: Ticalian Breaks Sugar B: Sugars Authentic Dub Disco This is a very nice compilation of funky techno. Some of it is trip-hop (Beanfield, EPY), some of it is more four-on-the-floor, and there are even a few breaks here and there. The Farmers Manual track is experimental and almost ambient, the Bluish track is at first trip-hoppy and melodic then goes jungle-ballistic, and the Alois Huber track experimental again with a dubby electroish flavor. Def Con goes for some trip hop, Suta Leta's track is noisy and about 8 secs long, and the Pita number is electroid and crunchy. All of the tracks have dark, lo-fi feel, but there is an unmistakable FUNKINESS about most of this stuff. This comp appears to be aligned with FIVE Magazine out of Vienna. I highly recommend this comp, but as usual you should try to listen before you purchase (duh!). On next: Neven: Twin Cycles...sample-o-mania! jim "Without music life would be a mistake." -- Friedrich Nietzsche--
