Cabaret Voltaire afficianados will be pleased to know that Mr Mallinder has
finally surfaced with some more music. Writing in partnerships under the
names Sassi & Locco and Coolin' Brothers he's turned up on a couple of
local things I've got recently. For what it's worth...
The Sassi & Locco track "Orange Street" turned up on an MDS DanceNet promo
sampler thingy that mysteriously arrived in my mailbox. The genre is
listed as dub/electronic. The sheet says: "Sassi & Loco are an electronic
duo consisting of ex-Cabaret Voltaire programmer Stephen Mallinder
(currently based in Perth) and Melbourne musician Travis Calley. Together,
Stephen and Travis create a distinctive blend of ethereal electronica fused
with dubby beats and blissful bleeps". It's a relaxed housey track with a
dubby bass, lots of wafty synths, some (male) vocal and flute samples,
vaguely reminiscent of CV's Groovy Laid Back & Nasty phase but not as
cheesy. It's the best track on the sampler, the rest is erky commercial
house and techno.
The Coolin' Brothers track "Cap it Full" is on a brand new comp called
Evolutionary Vibes II (CVCD007) by Sydney label and distributor Creative
Vibes. It's a 2CD comp of drum&bass, hip-hop, trip-hop and electronica.
Co-writers are listed as S. Norton and J. Long and was apparently written
in 4 hours. The track is mainly trip-hop with loads of scratches at the
start and messy ride cymbal but veers towards "intelligent" d&b with some
female vocals, string samples and melodies. It doesn't remind me of any
Cabs stuff. And as a bonus, I'm on the disc too.
