i agree with the first bit; it seems that anyone who samples/speeds up a breakbeat these days is immediately labelled as a drum n bass artist. IMO, a breakbeat is a necessary part of a drum and bass tune, but its nowhere near sufficient. i reckon squarepusher gets this dnb label purely because of the breakbeat sampling. fair enough, he may have had a go at some dnb (eg tundra), and he may use similar production techniques, but if you dropped anything from his latest album at a full-on dnb night, the dj would get some weird looks. i mean you dont call alex reece jazz just cos he sampled a bloody trumpet, or public enemy rock just cos they sampled a distorto-guitar. squarepusher isnt dnb. he makes all types of tunes, and gets unfairly pigeon-holed. HND is closer to jazz, if anything, cos it sounds like a band being castrated er orchestrated in a jazz kind of way. (solos, blues-scale melodies etc). but whats my opinion worth? dont take my word for it. as for "intelligent drum and bass", well, i just dont know what that means. as far as im concerned, i read "intelligent" as "theyve cut up the break in more places" ie intelligent is a silly name. i dont know, dont cross examine me, man. Mad Frankie tries it on:

dont bother paying this moronic amount of cashmoney for this. IT ISNT WORTH IT. if you really wanted fast bucks, try selling it for 6UKP, which is more than its worth anyway. good luck to you though, some dickhed might pay this for it (sucker). i used my copy as an ashtray, bidding starts now. tada chris m

what i mean by intelligent (maybe i should have just used well thought out instead of intelligent) is that its not just some sped up drum loop with an anemic wash of synths over it ... what alot of what im hearing sounds like ... with alot of people jumping on the drumnbass wagon or jungle wagon or whatever the media wants to call it ... what i have enjoed recently has been songs like plug's life of the mind on drum and bass for papa ... a song with a structure and with depth ... and multi layers of meaning ... not just some dribble that people will dance to just cuz someone calls it drum and bass ... . annwn . .

A friend (who may step forward and identify himself if he wishes) said the other day "ever notice that a lot of drum and bass is just an opportunity to re-use all those crappy M1 pads?" (M1 being Korg M1, a popular digital keyboard, whose factory presets are still splattered on TV Commercials, Porno films, and low rent TV soundtrack music) As a counter example of what D&B can be, check out Amon Tobin (aka Cujo) the EP "Chomp Samba." What I find especially cool about this EP, aside from slamming together sped up latin drumming with hints of the Amen break, is the way that Tobin appropriates the Ed Rush/Nico 'dark/hard' style and gives it a lot more texture and color. It's almost as though the guy listened to Panacea and a bunch of Torque records and said "right then, lets show them how to do it proper." This is the Ninja Tune ZenCDS 53: 1. Chomp Samba 2. Creatures (Hidden Agenda Defocused Mix) 3. Shiny Things* 4. Daytrip *(great use of snare break, great acoustic bass & piano sample) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

What I mean by intelligent is being able to assign a meaningful Subject: line to an email - obviously not you two's forte. The whole "I Hate The Intelligent Label" debate has been done to death - give it a rest. Che
