I had both Virtual State and The Conversation by Richard H. Kirk, but sold them a long time ago. For me, his music is thoughtless and drab. It just didn't light any spark with me. I was listening tothe second disc of The Conversation while in bed one night and it dawned on me that he had used the subtle sounds of a bong being smoked in the background. What the hell is he trying to say to me? That this music is good for being stoned to? Great! Who the f*ck cares!? I sold my two Kirk CDs the next day and have not bought his music ever since. Now, I don't care that people smoke and I can see how ambient music and pot can go together, but the addition of the bong sounds in this disc just make me feel that the artist is cheapening his music by gearing it toward the drug user. I felt insulted as a listener. I also sold my UFOrb because it had he same bubly bong sounds, as I remember. Go figure. Hess -/\= Hess M. I thought that "sounding good under the influence of drugs" was an important component of this kind of music. I should think many people would "care" if it holds up to the higher levels of inspection and enjoyment provided by interesting combinations of sound and chemicals. I'm not really responding to the Kirk thread so much as saying that I sell my CDs if they DON'T hold up to higher states of listening. Oh, by the way, that doesn't mean that the CDs in my for sale list are the kind that won't spin you on ; ) Peace, Charlie

I've never quite related these sounds to bong smoking, but it's an interesting correlation. However, I really wouldn't worry about it until you see smoke coming from the speakers. PS: Did anyone hear those coke sniffing sounds on the new Squarepusher record? ;-) Tim
