_Virtual State_ has a more abstract, electronic, "not of this world" sort of sound. Head trip music. _The Number of Magic_ is looser and funkier, but the two records are not radically different. Personally I like _Virtual State_ better of the two, and it's one of the better records he's done period, certainly in recent years. --Mark On Thu, 8 May 1997, craig. wrote:

Re: "Virtual State" Of all the releases RHK has put out over the last four years, "Virtual State" still stands up to repeated listening. A nice hollow drum sound in "Come", and good use of third world and other samples. "The Number Of Magic" has a more overt sound than "Virtual State". "Love Is Deep" bottom out nicely, and make my speakers wobble more than Laurent Garnier's "Crispy Bacon". Overall, both CD's are good introductions to RHK's recent material. He mentioned that his next will material will be drum 'n bass. I'm not looking forward to it. Paul Rafanello intone@warwick.net

Just curious, call me crazy but I'd be interested in hearing what Mr. Kirk could do with hectic breakbeats. Something tells me he wouldn't use sampled drum loops but rather fast tempo 808/909 programming (just cuz he uses so much of it already). I think if done right he could pull off something quite nice. A much needed departure from his techno/house spell of late. peace- Nate Harrison Digital Magician Inc. www.digimagician.com nate@digimagician.com 313.994.7316

ok my two cents ... i am starting to get sick of the dn'b label being thrown about with all abandon ... but i still think that there is some wonderful stuff being released (but just alot more crap too) the new squarepusher is awesome ... i am eagerly awaiting the new meatbeatmanifesto single for both jacks and luke viberts remixes ... these are three groups that have consistantly put out very interesting and extremly intelligent drum and bass (assasinator from subliminal sandwich is god awesome) i would like to hear RHK's drum and bass but i am afraid that [based on his work the last few years] it will not be that innovative or challenging ... i of course will be the first in line to snag my copy of it ... but my hopes arent that high ... . annwn . .

Are you saying that "Project80" from "The Conversation" doesn't? If so, you're daft, man. Che

Dunno, but my two dimes: mr kirk - cabaret voltaire - sandoz were once pushing boundaries or ignoring them. to get on the breakbeat train now? perhaps he's missing some stops... perhaps it's not about keeping ahead of the pack, but imho at least you could stay out of it! :bradvert

Out of the two warp albums I find myself listening to The Number of Magic most. It's an album that really grew on me with time. Lots of detail and effects happening that you might not catch on the first listen or ten. The first track IMHO is damn cool (watch out for that guitar). Also good (apart from the Cabs of course): Electronic Eye "Closed Circuit" on Beyond (are their CDs going to stay in print?), and the Sandoz stuff on Touch - I think "Everyman Got Dreaming" is rather under-rated. Check out the Kudos "C is for Cherries" comp. He has a track as Cold Warrior which seems to be just as you describe. Not _quite_ d'n'b, but it does tweak the right tweaky bits. I really ought to get "The Conversation" back from my friend to check out those bubbles. -- Chris Tourgelis np: crooklyn dub consortium, vol. 2 (trying to smell the inside slick ;)

Richard Kirk has some nice stuff, but I always have thought of him as being on the fringe of electronics, although Cabaret Voltaire was popular. Is there a big following of him, and/or Mallinder's work? To me, his cold machined approach to music is very nice, as he throws in a few warm chords here and there. Could someone tell me more about him? WHats his best stuff? How long has he been doing music? Cheers, A. Mukerjee A.
