It seems that this situation is stirring up some deep emotions in a lot of us. With the advent of "electronica" becoming the next big thing, it's only a matter of time until some of the music that we hold so dear is accepted by the masses, chewed up, and spit out. As with every other trend, there will be certain artists who will get all the hype/press and will either continue to make good music or implode from the pressure of fame. But I strongly feel that the underground scene (us) will continue on as is. Face it kids, once the media has it claws in something they think is "cool" for the moment, things can only get ugly. As long as all of the music that I hold dear is NEVER on the top 40 charts, I'll be happy. But for now, let's sit back and enjoy the ride. James Bernard

I think it really comes down to why someone listens to electronic music (of any kind). If it just cause it's the new fad, or because they truly love it. It has nothing to do with someone being more "underground" than another. I wasn't saying that everyone on the IDM list is automatically "underground". Writing and listening to electronic music to me has alwalys been a release, a vehicle for channeling all the shit that's swilrling around in my head. Regardless of whether it becomes the next big thing or not, I'll be composing and listening to it till I'm gone. James Bernard

I have to admit I more or less feel the same way. maybe not for the same reason. if what goes for underground now (stasis? aphex? fsol?) became chart fodder i would probably kick myself and go out there to find what is happening again in the underground, after all, that is where the innovation takes place. of course this is a hypothetical situation because really, i don't think it will *ever* happen

Or get off before the track runs out? whatever, just enjoy the music. you can be sure that if the time comes when richard james is vying with luke vibert for column space in smash hits, there will be something out there on 500-limited white label that kicks the arse of both of them.. keep your ear to the ground and you'll hear what's going on below, that's about as good a piece of advice as i can give at this moment in time np - neocortex - sensurreal ~~~ Through universes of worlds of shadows, S G the subconscious geography remains a constant. ~~~ Makyo 622AD

Why would it be a bad thing for "the masses" to ge a taste of some really powerful and innovative music being created worldwide? I think if "they" actually got a chance to hear it, "they'd" take it as a treat of their aural pallates and ask for more instead of spitting it out. I think that would be a lot better for "them" -- instead of continuing to be passive consumers of whatever MTV and the corporate-music-sound-machine wants "them" to be. Hey, it might even inspire people to make their own music and not just tune in to whatever the media marketed for them.

If you are true to yourself and to your music, you'll cotinue to grow. If you are a money-making-sound- machine first and a musician second, then that greed will shine through in what you make. Disposable music.

charts, I'll > be happy. I wish the music I love was on the top forty charts. That to me would mean that enough people bought some really good music for a change. As opposed to the new marketing act released by Columbia House. Lazy people eat what they are fed. If BMG wants to tap into the rap/hip hop market and target it to a white audience, what do they put together? Vanilla Ice. If smaller labels could get their product to be heard by more people, there would be more of a variety. People enjoy music and if "they" had a choice between Milli Vanilli and Funki Porcini, they would probably chose what "THEY" liked best. At least they had the option. Why keep all this good music to ourselves?

so you don't think there's a difference between 'in the charts' and chart fodder? maybe not! i liked the second half of dead cities but i think it's their worst LP. and i thought the explosive single was execrable, so at least it supports my theory to me. but there is a difference between being chart fodder and simply having something in the charts, surely? great records get in the charts, yes - 'in your hearts not the charts' is a pompous statement for sure. 808 state made great records that got in the top 10, and aphex and fsol have been there before. but 808 state fell to the wayside, and fsol might do the same thing if they wander down this hard-breakbeat industro-plop path. aphex hit back though, with mind-blowing originality that no commercial radio station this side of venus would ever play, and he always remembers to take the piss in interviews, so that nasty invention called the top 40 isn't always the kiss of death. hopefully!
