i dont know what turned warp onto broadcast suddenly...they seem to have been a semi-pub band for years... scraping by...and when they appeared on duophonic, i just felt like stereolab were trying to build a scene around themselves, so they looked a bit more influential and creative than they have become...stereolabs early stuff is excellent, but is now so bland it makes me want to cry!.... paul

What?! Don't agree with that at all. I've been a fan for years and I like the stuff they're doing now better than anything they've done before. Emperor Tomato Ketchup is the best album they've dont i think. Any other stereolab fans on the list? Yes, I am a Stereolab fan. I prefer Peng! over Emperor Tomato Ketchup. I wasn't as into the last release William Samuels

Yep ... although I'm of the same opinion (i.e. stuff now has gone downhill) .: WD :.

Yes, they get better and better. When I first heard them a few years ago I was a bit put-off by what at first sounded like guitars to me. Nonetheless I quickly was sucked in by the incredibly smooth and intricate and untraditional melodies they use, both in the music and in the vocals. And, of course, the guitars are only a small part of their music, a lush, beautiful world of languages and pure sounds. And, yes, sometimes they even rock it or swing it or pound it too. The first track on ETK is so good! And I love that woman's sexy french voice singing deconstructivist lyrics! Pak yr romantic mind! -CF

well.. all good things to come, will come, wellcome transient random noise bursts with announcements v. emperor tomato ketchup - varied production, drone levels, a different form of pop, retro in a different way? regardless I like them both - the Stereolab old and new - the same, to compose, decompose, to recompose. from a minute to another, from miniscule to the grandeur. paull7_oquet warranty free http//www.mother.com/~bravopop

actually, i think it's kind of interesting that, here in the states, more "traditional" or "conventional" bands are scrambling to incorporate the influence of "electronica" into their repertoire: trent reznor, the sea & cake, trans-am, smashing pumpkins, flowchart, tortoise...even unwound (i saw unwound offshoot long hind legs last night and they were absolutely abysmal; early-'80s lo-fi new wave...bad new order interpreted by post-sunny day real estate indie kidz, completely with crappy drum machine and bad keyboard technique). meanwhile, over thar across the pond, electronic labels and groups are scrambling to incorporate "traditional" or "conventionally" instrumented influences into theirs: warp with jimi tenor, red snapper, and now broadcast; mouse on mars cutting an ep with stereolab's vocalists; aphex twin and locust moving into vocals; underworld, lionrock, fat boy slim, et. al. who's zooming who, here? sc

Stereolab has been consistintly awesome throughout their career (and they did collaborate with the mighty Nurse With Wound which gains them loads of points in my books). Anyway whatever. Buy the first 3 Neu records to find out where they copped all their riffs from. Jeff

yes, yes, yes. ekt is an awesome album after a so-so effort with mars...,15 songs without alot of variation. switched on vol. 2 is a great entry album with songs from a number of impossible to find singles. also flourescenes (sp?) is an excellent newish single if you can find it. cl

It was a 10" that came out a few years ago on Clawfist. One side is a track called 'Animal Or Vegetable', it's a droney Stereolab track with Steve Stapelton (Nurse With Wound) contributing 'Nurse With Wound' sounds (if you've heard them before you know what I mean...creaking things, chants, duck noises, general sillyness). The other side is the track 'Exploding Head Movie'. The 10" was really limited but I think World Serpent re-issued it on CD at one point. Jeff
