Almost sold my T-power (self evident...) CD the other day thank god I didn't. I never knew there was 10th track on it. First 9 or so minutes of this tracks is a combination of "mouth music" and stuff you'd expect to hear on one of them Swarm of the Drones discs, really freakey experimental shit. Then the bird chirps come in and it's back to a T-power track that fits with the rest of the disc, but shit I never knew it had this extra track. That's what falling asleep to a disc can do (those who are on the ambient list have been talking about sleep music) to you. Anyone else had similar experiences with extra "hidden" tracks. This is *one* advantage CD's have over vinyl gil

Yes, it's quite lovely, innit? Lucky for me my CDROM player skips right past the experimental stuff. Funny, I'm listening to Waveform right now and was just thinking "too bad this one doesn't have a hidden track...".

There's a ridiculous track on "Very" by the PSB that has Chris singing "I believe in ecstacy", or some such drivel on it. I believe there's a hidden track on Alt.Frequencies. I find it to be irritating, to tell you the truth.

You obviously don't own a vinyl copy of "You're the Guy I Want To Share All My Money With" with Laurie Anderson, WSBurroughs, and Bryan Guison. Side 4 has 2 hidden tracks. I believe Monty Python did this on vinyl too once. Che

Empathy Box has those dodgy bits on the end ... a rendition of the Mission Impossible theme (well something that sounds alot like it anyways) , and some other dicking around ... .: WD :.

for those who have the dmx krew cd on rephlex... if you listen past the 10th track... these a telephone message from mike dred (kosmik kommando) talking about the demo tape from the dmx k. ...and the gentle people CD, soundtracks for living. at the end of the last track... a few minutes later the is a cheesy 60's sample from some wacky announcer.

All this talk of hidden/extra tracks on CD makes me wonder... Exactly how much music can be pressed on a slab of 12" @ rpm? Some full lengths [especially Rephlex albums] seem to be more generous on CD format than vinyl. It depends on how much you like bass - bass mean bigger grooves, fewer per disk. Alos depends on how much you dislike noise - faster speed means better signal to noise, less music. So, good quality means about 10 minutes per side, shitty quality means about 30 minutes per side. Best quality means CD at 80 minutes a side. ;) Chill Che

not if you want it to sound good. the mastering facilities i have dealt with have told me 12 minutes per side at 45 rpm and 18-20 mins per side at 33. it is technically possible to put up to 35 mins per side at 33 rpm but it won't sound good at all. all this talk about "fitting the grooves closer together" is true, except that if you want to be nitpicky about it, there is only one groove on a record. it's really a question of how tightly packed you want the spiral. since the needle has to "wiggle" from side to side, you want to have more horizontal spacing between the walls of the spiral to get better sound. and of course 45 rpm will sound better because there's more signal running by the needle per unit time. re hidden tracks - the one at the end of "orblivion" is quite excellent and really bumped the album up a notch in my estimation. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications How the drunk and the maimed both are dragged forward out of the arena like a boneless Christ, one man under each arm, feet dragging, eyes on the aether. it depends really. it might depend on the length of the track. 33 or 45 rpms. i have a few electron industries release that play at 45 and take up the whole slab and the track is only like 6 0r 7 minutes long. also, who wide or thin the grooves are. i don't really know the technicalities oh that. any other thoughts???
