I'm currently (very temporarily) working in Bangalore India and I had the
chance to pick up some CD's of Indian pop music, including a 2CD "greatest
hits of A R Rahman vol II" which is pretty good in some places, and
velveeta-laden in others. Picked up Channel Hits vol I & II, a greatest
hits album of Alika (sp?), and various compilations of other indian-stylee
dance tunes, mostly excerpted from hindi movies. One "traditional Bhangra"
(i.e. lots of drums) CD too. Total of about 10 CD's averaging $5.00-$7.50
ea. (new) ... The interesting thing about India (esp
Bombay==Mumbai==Bollywood) is that a lot of the popular dance music is
actually music from popular India "pulp" movies, which to my gringo
eyes/ears appear to be a cross between cheezy soap operas and extremely
elaborate MTV videos with great dance choreography... The music markets
the movies, and vice-versa.
Anyways A R Rahman is one of those popular hindi film music producers. The
film music dance numbers here are reminiscent of the "golden age of movies"
in the USA when every decent movie had a few song and a few grand dance
scenes that "made" the movie. Sometimes it's a pair of stars a la Ginger
Rogers n' Fred Astaire, and sometimes it's a dance extravaganza ala Busby
Berkelee (sp?). And they're going whole-hog marketing the
music/movie/star-infatuation by rechristening Bombay as "Bollywood"...
I'll post more of a review when I get back to a decent sound system (my
only CD player is the crappy-sounding one masquerading as a CD-ROM drive
built into my laptop). I'm kinda dying to see what it's like to mix some of
these on my Pioneer CDJ500mkII CD-DJ rig and play them through some real
speakers.
PS: Indian MTV and "V" (India&Singapore MTV) play stuff you'd never get to
see in the US. For example, i got to see a Josh Wink video the other night
on "V"... And we're not talking late-night-when-everybody's-sleeping-
we'll-put-on-AMP-to-appease-the-crackerjack-crowd. Nope, we're talking
prime-time "IDM" videos on TV. (Uh, except they play way too much "Spice
Girls" videos, which, as far as I can tell, is just like being cross-eyed
while watching ABBA on bad drugs :-) ) Ok, gotta get back to work now.
