Most MaS releases are 45, I believe, but so many of them sound strangely good when played at 33; I know people who swear by the "swap" 12" at 33RPM. Some don't sound right at either 33 or 45 (aemic: "beta") Groovy? Funky? Weak? You make the call. Most don't have any markings on them to say one way or another. with this particular release (aemic: beta), i find that one side sounds best at 45 (the side with only one track) and the other sounds better at 33. that is at least to my ears. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i came to exactly the same odd conclusion about 'beta'. funny that. the other mas i have, 'aleph', the andre estermann ep and a demon ep (can't remember which), all sound better at 33. there is a track from the demon ep on 'marion' and it sounds just like the 12" at 33. but i do recall that at least all the funkstorung/mas releases were supposed to be 45. -martin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Then I gave it a try at 45 and found it just about listenable. One of my huge personal pet peeves is when labels don't list RPM speeds on the records. I've had more than one experience getting a CD version of a record to find out I'd been playing it at the wrong speed. Whether or not the record happens to sound good at the wrong speed is merely happenstance: listeners should be able to evaluate the music as it was pressed to be played. Plus it really sucks when you talk to someone about a record and you are both effectively talking about different things due to the speed. It gets even more convoluted in electronic music with all the weird records out there that can easily be interpreted either way. List the RPM's! However, that doesn't stop me from saying that the Plaid "Undoneson" 12" on Warp sounds excellent on 33, and on 45 sounds like the rest of "Not For Threes": forgettable. So it's cool to experiment with different RPM's, but labels should be considerate and throw those two little numbers on the sleeve or label itself. And I believe the While 12" is a 45. It sounded lackluster at 33 but really strong at 45. I think I remember hearing once that the Fng releases are 33 and the rest are 45, but who knows. And even when they do it is sometimes the wrong one - 45 as 33 rpm and vice versa. I think the secret is to really listen in to the frequency dynamics and pick up the real speed that it was recorded in. Just listen closely to the bass and the claps. e.g A scorpion's dream is a good example - at 33 rpm speed the bass/ claps sounds are slightly more distorted and unusually slow, when sped up to 45 (real speed) you can hear the truer frequencies and track sounds a lot smoother. This also fits with the Rachmad "fast sound". Rare to find his tracks below 100 bpm Ditto for those records which list as "play as any speed". Sonic Boom was a prime suspect for this. Did anyone play Funkstorung - Funkenstort at the wrong speed. I though it sounded really good at 33, then I found out it was 45 and had to get rid of it. I can my head around playing it at the wrong speed, it eats at me. Just thought I'd share that. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I believe the A-side is at 33rpm and the B-side at 45!! Regards, Magnus Karlsson <e96maka@stud.hh.se> --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I hate to prolong this subject, but I made an MD of Fakesch's Demon 1+2 at 33 rpm when the 12"s came out. This quickly became one of my favorite things to listen to. Then I rush out to get the Marion CD upon its release. Imagine my surprise when "Surfaise" sounds alot faster. I still find the CD somewhat difficult to my ears. Anyone else have this problem?
