Reply to: RE>>(idm) Coldcut cannot agree more with what zenon's saying about coldcut - legendary radio show on london's kiss fm every saturday night/sunday morning ("solid steel") is just phenomenal - they are (imho) the best 4-deck mixers in existence, as evidenced by their blinding performance at wetlands (nyc) about 4/5 weeks ago - n-tone/ninja tune is their hot, hot label - their "stealth" nights at the blue note (hoxton square, london) were amazing - they are old school and new school and, in my opinion, a cut above the rest - and their new "coldkrushcuts" double mix cd (one them with dj food, one dj krush) is awesome (well, their cd is awesome, krush's not as good) - as you can tell i like 'em and i respect them for their talent and their scruples (by which i mean they seem to be motivated only by the music) iain -------------------------------------- Date: 3/21/97 3:08 PM To: Iain Newton From: Zenon M. Right on. Coldcut's early material is all good fun also. They/it basically launched Lisa Stansfield's career with the typically house "People Hold On" and the atypically (for Lisa) rapful "My Telephone", which uses a phone bell sample to brilliant effect. Also infamous for the Jetsons' sample in the reggae-toasting "Stop this Crazy Thing". I'm partial to the jazzier side of Coldcut, from "Philosophy" into the Ninja catalogue. Trippy jazz for moody bohemians. If I recall, it was also Coldcut who introduced Ofra Haza to the Western audience via the sample on "Not Paid Enough", which MARRS (aka A.R. Kane and the Colourbox gents, one of whom recently passed away, last work being a brutal remix of a Wolfgang Press track) also even more mercilessly and merrily mangled into the mutation of "Pump Up the Volume". If nothing else, one must appreciate Coldcut's sense of humour, always subversive in a likable way. That's all Ancient Sampling Prehistory, no? 3

<previous message text lost> I've read in numerous magazine articles that Eric B & Rakim were pretty marginal until Coldcut's "Paid In Full" mix made the UK top 10. The track made a name for EB&R, and they were pissed that a couple of white boys had done it. EB&R never gave Coldcut any kind of credit or respect, though they pocketed the money. Coldcut made something like 200 quid, which is why they released "Not Paid Enough". But it made a name for them too - got them the album deals they wound up hatin' so much. Never will forget the first time I heard "Paid In Full" - it was on DJ JD's wednesday night hiphop show on WREK - he mixed the instrumental (Coldcut) part underneath "Run's House" so flawlessly that I went and bought the RunDMC 12", then I found out it was Eric B & Rakim. Doh! Then I bought a bunch of EB&R, thinkin' they was cool, but found out it was Coldcut that was cool. I wound up buyin' Coldcut when I heard that crazy Tarzan yodel in "Stop This Crazy Thing" on the radio. Been a fan ever since, though it puzzled me when they disappeared for a few years. Coldcut's "JB Payback Mix" is one of the alltime great sampling tours de force. They take at least one measure of what seems like every James Brown song ever and tempo match it for one seamless (though disorienting in its overload factor) groove. More importantly, unlike most hack DJs, they knew how to make the seques work musically - no discordance due to bad pitch shifts or chord changes. At the time it took the top of my head off with the possibilities it showed me. I've still got a scratchy copy on DAT somewhere.... Che

It is too bad about the minuscule amount of money that Coldcut got payed for the mix of "Paid In Full", but I hope you aren't implying that Eric B. & Rakim aren't "cool" because of this. They are one of the true innovators in hip-hop IMO. _Paid In Full_ and _Follow the Leader_ are classics! Rakim's style has influenced many -- Paris and Da Germ (on Shadow) come immediately to mind. Coldcut are definitely great and I'm continually amazed by their own work and remixes for others, but to take away credit from EB&R is way off. | E r i c | [mail] franse@engr.arizona.edu | | F r a n s | [web] http://intermix.engr.arizona.edu/~franse | "Make the events occur that you want to occur" - The Black Dog

Well, I know there's the 12" for People Hold On (b/w Yes, Yes, Yes) on Big Life and a promo for People Hold On (w/ 5 mixes of the song) on Tommy Boy/Big Life... picked them up today, though I can just tell its not going to be anything like I hope it'll be (who hasn't heard either before...) __________________________________________ sfwd@sonic.net wasted time in mass abundance

There's lots of good info (and a brief and somewhat incomplete discog) at http://www.obsolete.com/pipe/ - it's missing their debut album, 'What's that Noise?' (Tommy Boy in the US, out of print as far as I know), and '70 Minutes of Madness' (which everyone simply refers to as 'Journeys by DJ') and a lot of remixes and so forth. And the US Promo CD for "Stop This Crazy Thing", PRO-CD-3849 on Tommy Boy/Reprise: 4:00 Radio Edit 4:31 Serious Edit by the Men from M/A/R/R/S 6:50 Serious Mix by the Men from M/A/R/R/S 4:30 Instrumental 7:00 Hedmaster Mix by Adrian Sherwood 7:22 Version Excursion 8:08 We Like the Music Mix I don't know if all or any of these were available otherwise. The Adrian Sherwood mix is really really good, and the last two are also pretty enjoyable. Early Coldcut: What's That Noise? Philosophy Recent Coldcut: JDJ (70 Minutes Of Madness) Cold Crush Cuts The latter are in print and available at finer perveyors of dance music everywhere. The former are out of print and best sought out in the used bins, though if you're in the US you'll have an easier time finding Philosophy w/ a WTB ad on the Net. In addition to the 12"s previously mentioned, there's a 12"/CDS of "Autumn Leaves" from Philosophy. Does anyone know what the name of the Mixmaster Morris mix is, andif it's on the CD? I saw a copy today... The new single is Atomic Moog, but I can't recommend it. Alex Patterson summed itupin The Wire. To paraphrase(sorry can't remember exact quote): This is good if it's from the 80's; otherwise it's a bit of a joke. They're all over er the Ninja Tune label in a variety of guises check out Hex and anything else w/ the More/Black names on it. Che

it's not on the CD single i have. (mine has: radio edit, full version, naked mix (basically an acapella), then two early coldcut sample/cutup classics "say kids what time is it" and "that greedy beat". then there's a track of a computer saying random things called "mad niall sez").

excuse me!? who cares when it was made, the track rocks! it sounds more like it's from the 70's anyway.

Dr. Pat misses the point. _Everything_ from Coldcut is a bit of a joke! That's the beauty of the Coldcut approach: undeniable talent with enough modesty to laugh at themselves. You almost expect the old Monty Python arrest ending to many of their tracks: "Alright, stop that right now! It's too silly. We'll have none of that here." 3

I believe it's just the Irresistible Force mix. There are a couple versions - the full length mix appears on the promo Arista doublepack for "Autumn Leaves" and "Feeling Strong" as well as on the LP "Philosophy," while there's a truncated version on the released Arista 12" for "Autumn Leaves". There's also a nother 12" for "Autumn Leaves" with a jazzier version - I believe this one is on Ninja Tunes. I disagree - I think they're a logical extension of the sampling aesthetic they've followed from their earliest releases! '70 Minutes of Madness' follows the same formula as "Beats & Pieces" or "Say Kids," it's just ten times as long, fully licensed, and much more technically sound.
