>Been hearing lots about them and just recently picked up their album and

>idm-y.
I bought their CD after reading a blurb from 4th-world
that described it using the words "skeletal drum and bass"
in that order. Well, there's no drum-n-bass, but some of drums and, well,
some bass. I'm afraid there's no dub either, to my ears.
The record starts with some uneven but listenable distorted drones,
not unlike Seefeel in texture, but far less polished sound-wise and
musically. That lasts for a while before a harmonium comes in,
noodling most-aimlessly. When the drums start, they are live-sounding
and loosly-played. No true beat is established- rather a cacophony
of echoing tom-toms, harmonium, and drone continue till fade.
All that doesn't sound bad on paper, but it really does fail to
go anywhere. I was really surprised at how little I could find to
like about it.
The rest of the record follows suit- in all a pretty uneven proposition.
Calls to mind a comment someone made in passing not too long ago about
Thrill Jockey's sound (throw-away).
That having been said, I still own it, and it's useful enough as
a source of noise in a mix. Also, one track is mixed by a member
of Tortoise, which may interest some.
From what I hear on this list, Rome have a compilation appearance
or two that are more interesting than their other work-
one on Macro Dub Infection 2 maybe.
