G'day, I was looking at the Aphex Twin singles collection CD the other day, and was wondering: should I get this or seek out the various EP's that make up this collection? Also, are the trax on the singles collection mixed together or anything (haven't listened to it yet) ? Cheers, Geoff

Well I have the Japanese version of this (I'm assuming it's exactly the same), and I would honestly have to say that THIS IS A WASTE OF MONEY, SO DO NOT EVEN BOTHER. This is why: First off, this release is entitled "51/13..." because it is a pathetic 51:13 minutes in length (give me a break). It's a straight compilation (no mixing), which features *some*, but not all of the tracks from the "On", "Donkey Rhubarb", and "Ventolin" eps. Absolutely nothing new or exclusive at all. In my opinion, much more could have been put on this. The versions of both "On" and "73-Yips" featured are the edited versions from the US issuance of the "On" cd single. When I say `edited' I don't mean a few minutes taken off, or the last few seconds having been faded out, but rather an asinine amount of time (like 40 seconds, or a minute) having been dropped off - for no apparent reason other than sloppy glass mastering on SIRE's part. Irritating. The two "Ventolin" edits are pretty much just the versions as they originally appeared on the eps, but having been faded out where they would have normally gone into the next mix. "Ventolin (marazanvose mix edit)" however, is actually an edit of the last 1:07 minutes of "Ventolin praze- an-beeble mix)" - the weird laughing bit - mixed into the entirety of "Ventolin (marazanvose mix)". Strange. Oh, and the the track, "Respect List", is pretty much just an excerpt from "Ventolin (crowsmengus mix)". Anyway, here's the track listing, etc: 51/13 APHEX SINGLES COLLECTION : APHEX TWIN (1996) 1 ON (u.s. edit) 6.49 2 PANCAKE LIZARD 4.30 3 VENTOLIN (crowsmengegus mix edit) 1.40 4 VENTOLIN (cylob mix) 5.02 5 DONKEY RHUBARB 5.58 6 VENTOLIN (deep gong mix) 6.17 7 73-YIPS (u.s. edit) 4.13 8 ICCT HEDRAL (philip glass orchestration) 7.56 9 VENTOLIN (marazanvose mix edit) 3.18 10 VENTOLIN (asthma beats mix) 1.40 11 VENTOLIN (carharrack mix) 2.49 12 RESPECT LIST .39 JAP (CD. WPCR-929) WEA JAPAN/SIRE/WARP RECORDS Buy the separate eps. Definitely *not* something for the established fan who's got it all already. There's no point in buying this unless you want an introduction into APHEX TWIN. This disc might as well be listed in the latest BMG catalogue. nothing was supposed to be new or exclusive about it, it was a kind of sampler for the japanese market only, something they asked for, these tracks have not been previously available there, rich chose the tracks and bits of tracks. g.
