I came in late to IDM so I've been just reading the reviews. I went out and got the new Aphex and "Tri" from Autechre. While both are ok, i think both are rambling and a bit unfocused. I know the hairs on some peoples' necks are standing up by now but I'm not looking to get flamed. I thought the last two MeatBeat releases were phenomenal with multiple-layered textures and actual songs!! Can anyone recommend some other releases that fall in that territory?

Be sure to check out DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing...". Its got more of a hip hop feel than Meat Beat's last two, but there is a definite "song-like" feel present. Unless you live under a rock you've probably already read numerous reviews of the album. In this case the hype is justified! | E r i c | [mail] franse@engr.arizona.edu | | F r a n s | [web] http://intermix.engr.arizona.edu/~franse | "Make the events occur that you want to occur" - The Black Dog

-----Original Message----- From: CLARDAV II thought the last two MeatBeat releases were phenomenal with multiple-layered textures and actual songs!! Can anyone recommend some other releases that fall in that territory? For "actual songs" that are kind of IDM like, check out: Emergency Broadcast Network (EBN) - "Telecommunications Breakdown" - Apparently most of the music on this band's album was done by Jack Dangers of Meatbeat. Not all great, but some really nice stuff on this record. Underworld - Their vocals remind me of 70's-80's art-rock. Epic themes. Laika "Silver Apples of the Moon" - Really nice sophisticated beats and melodies. This is the woman who was the good half of from Moonshake. Their new album came out last week and its not as great as Silver Apples. Moloko - "Do you like my tight sweater" - I just got this and it's really cool. There's this woman singing these funky almost scat-like yet funny lyrics on top of . It's kind of goofy in some ways, but never annoyingly so. Mad Professor vs Massive Attack - "No Protection" - The Prof remixes the entire Massive Attack "Protection" album. Kickz the shit out of the original. Real trippy and HARD HARD HARD. On Now: StereoLab "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" OLV26 (sounds like the soft-moog arpeggio breakdown from KW's Autobahn!) And of course theres all that trip-hop (massive attack, tricky, portishead) that I'm sure the few single minded purists on this list will hate even more than the stuff I've listed above. -Chris Fahey
