just picked up nonplace urban field's remix version of the killer _raum fur
notizen_, _golden star_, and let me say on a few of these tracks (the ones
he remixes...the rest are done by such names as solid doctor, porter ricks,
pink elln, muslimgauze, pluramon, scanner, etc.--all excellent, btw) mr.
friedmann is just _pissing_ all over the paltry contributions of the
drill'n'bass crowd. insanely intricate, extremely musical interweavings of
jazz, funk, supermessedup jungle, and bizarre ambient/experimental noise
(there's even a herbert-y house track that out-herberts herbert!). the
basslines on "vinyl 1:1" and "plane spotting" (just to pick the first two
tracks) just destroy squarepusher's quasi-jaco noodling, with drum pattens
in abstractia spinning all about every which way. it's one thing to just
speed patterns up till they literally fall over themselves, but its another
to _suggest_ this process by tossing snare cracks and kick drums across the
staff with such precision. friedmann's sense of dynamics and his ability to
break tracks up at just the right time astounds me. combine mouse on mars
with atom heart, bedouin ascent, and a bit of early plug and you're
starting to get close...i was expecting this to be a good album (i bought
it without even hearing it first!), but fuck, not _this_ good. i have yet
to see either _raum fur notizen_ nor _golden star_ mentioned here, and i
must say y'all people need to WAKE UP!!!
