I realize posting this list so late is ridiculous and that posting such
lists is pretty silly in general, but my computer was out of service
when these were being posted and I figured since I spent time putting it
together I'd post it anyway. And I need to add that this isn't really an
IDM favorites list, but more of an electronic music favorites list. And
the records are listed in (mostly) alphabetical order not in order of
how much I liked them. So here goes nothing.
ALBUM MOST LIKELY TO BE MISTAKEN FOR A MUSIQUE CONCRETE RECORD:
Oren Ambarchi - insulation (Touch)
I included this in my list because half of the time it sounds like what
was
coming out of INA-GRM or WDR in the 50's.
As someone with experience in "prepared/extended techniques" guitar,
I have to say this cd is completely perplexing, awe inspiring and
overwhelming.
A groundbreaking album for "experimental" guitar playing.
The next link in the Bailey/Rowe/Frith/Reichel/Frisell/O'Rourke/etc.
continuum.
I don't understand how he can pull this stuff off in real time without
a computer.
__________
IDM VIDEO MOST LIKELY TO SCARE VIRGIN, AUTECHRE LOVING IDMers:
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker EP (Warp)
Some of his best work imo.
__________
ALBUM MOST LIKELY TO BE MISTAKEN FOR A TECHNO RECORD:
Async Sense - S/T (Imbalance Computer Music)
Jeff Mills meets (a young) Steve Reich ?
This was actually just a repress/reissue, but I personally don't know
anyone
who heard this one before the repressing.
__________
fennesz - Plays EP (Mego / Moikai)
What hasn't already been said about this one ? Beautiful
deconstructions.
If I hear one more person say that his versions don't resemble the
originals at all
I'm gonna kill someone (not really). Whoever says that is either not
very familiar
with the originals or wasn't paying much attention while listening to
this.
__________
SELECTION LEAST LIKELY TO QUALIFY AS IDM:
Pierre Henry - 01.0: Mix 4xCD (Philips)
Just plain important.
__________
ALBUM MOST LIKELY TO BE MISTAKEN FOR A DRUM'N'BASS RECORD:
Hrvatski - Oiseaux 96-98 (Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge)
What Himuro might have sounded like had he grown up listening to
INA-GRM records.
Disorienting.
__________
Ryoji Ikeda - Mort Aux Vaches (Staalplaat)
Probably my favorite Ikeda release.
Very similar to some of Mika Vainio's non-Panasonic work.
__________
Monolake - Interstate CD (Monolake / Imbalance Computer Music)
State of the art, super digital, electro-accoustic tech-house or
whatever.
__________
Mouse On Mars - Niun Niggung (Our Choice)
I love Mouse On Mars' work, but for some reason it took me a few
listens to warm up to
this one. Probably 'cuz I expected something more radical, but these
guys are just
brilliant. The attention to detail and the wealth of ideas in their
work is pretty hard to match.
__________
Noto - 20' to 2000.september / time..dot EP (Raster)
My favorite of the series and one of my favorite collections in this
minimal clicks and
pops genre.
__________
ALBUM MOST LIKELY TO BE MISTAKEN FOR AN AUTECHRE RECORD:
Michael Fakesch - Marion (Musik Aus Strom)
Hyperprism is the shit !
Jake Mandell - The Placekick EP (Carpark)
ALBUM MOST LIKELY TO BE MISTAKEN FOR AN ALBUM ON WARP:
V.A. - Ischemic Folks (Schematic)
This trio of albums contains some of the most advanced post-Autechre
material
I've heard and which I personally enjoy more than Autechre's recent
work (LP5/EP7).
__________
Eve - "Gotta Man"
Jay-Z / DMX - "Money, Cash, Hoes"
Outkast / Mystikal - "Neck Uv Da Woods"
Q-Tip - "Breath And Stop"
I watch too much MTV/BET.
__________
Bogdan Raczynski - Boku Mo Wakaran (Rephlex)
Bogdan Raczynski - Samurai Math Beats (Rephlex)
My initial excitement about these has worn off, but Raczynski is still
about the only
worthwhile new act on Rephlex in the last couple of years.
These don't stand up to repeated listening all that well, mostly due to
the samey
character of the tracks, but the manic, hyperactive breaks are great.
__________
ALBUM MOST LIKELY TO BE MY FAVORITE IDM RECORD OF '99:
Super_Collider - Head On (Loaded)
This album's amazing. I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk about
this one on IDM. I guess it's a bit too sexy for our puritanical IDM
community.
Their use of DSP is absolutely musical and inspiring and Lidell's
disembodied,
dada soul vocals are really fucking entertaining.
Groundbreaking stuff (for pop) imo.
__________
Honorable mentions:
Aemic - Beta 10" (Musik Aus Strom)
Gimmik - ?!load -error EP 12" (Toytronic / Worm Interface)
The B side is awesome. God, I love the "Richard D. James" album.
Ryoji Ikeda - 20' to 2000.march / 99(1999)::variations for modulated
440hz sinewaves:: (Raster-Noton)
About as austere as it gets.
Plone - For Beginner Piano (Warp)
On first listen I found this too cheeky, but after a couple more
listens I couldn't stop
listening to it for a couple of weeks. Melodicism.
Wolfgang Voigt - 20' to 2000.november / 20 minuten gas im november
(Raster-Noton)
V.A. - .aiff CD (12K)
V.A. - Kompakt : Total 1 CD & LP (Kompakt)
V.A. - toshoklabs presents: dated (Toshoklabs)
__________
Most disappointing release of 99:
V.A. - Warp 10+3: The Remixes (Warp)
__________
yup.
