Some interesting releases plopped into my mailbox... here's a couple of
quick reviews:
:: v/a "Paradigm Shift" (Nettwerk)
:: release date: February 25th, 1997
From cEvin Key's Subconscious Studios.... it's a compilation of mostly
unreleased Key-related projects. While your standards like Download, Skinny
Puppy, Doubting Thomas and Tear Garden all appear here, the late Dwayne
Goettel makes appearances as 'aduck' with two excursions in heavy
electronic dance music (the track "burnout" is the most interesting of the
two, laying hypnotic trancey beats over hyperspeed dense drum'n bass
breaks. Very innovative indeed!) and the first ever track from plateaU, a
sorta housey melodic excursion in very spacious techno. The disc also
includes tracks from Kone and Dead Voices on Air. Worthwhile if you're into
the more industrial-tinged side of electronic music.

:: "Trip Tease" The Seductive Sounds of Tipsy (Asphodel)
:: release date: ?
Tipsy take a sort of illbient collage approach to cocktail, mixing in tons
of different sources sampling everything together in a giant mush of sound.
One big sample-happy record this ain't tho (last-year's absolutely
horrendous Pappa Woody record comes to mind) as Tispy have captured lively
cocktail with help from musicians like Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), Joe Gore
(PJ Harvey/Tom Waits), Mark Wyman and more. Full of slide guitars,
trumpets, rattles and twangy bass, Tipsy have succeeded combining all the
cheese of early cocktail, with a friendly concentration of 90's charm.
