yeh, i like 'em. i had a full length cd of theirs on Domestic (title escapes me...something latin sounding mebbe?) and heard them mixed into a few Dj discs (i.e. W's Jet Set)...good spacey electro. A friend of mine saw them out in San Francisco, picked up a free copiy of their disc and met them. said they were nice folx. And that's all for now from useless news. -zach "Silence is twice as fast as backwards...three times."

Just picked up Urmur Bile Trax today. So far it sounds all good, but that's not what I want to complain about. I picked up the import version for $12.99 which, according to listmembers, is the exact price being charged at Tower for the domestic version. The obvious question is this: what the funk is the point of a domestic version at all if you're going to charge the same damn price for it? The entire point of the CD in the first place was to treat the fans to some great music for a very reasonable mid-range price. Astralwerks has completely ignored this and jacked up would should be a $7.99 to $8.99 CD to $12.99, the price of a full length album. Astralwerks seems to be in the habit of overpricing ep's and singles and frankly, it's getting a little retarded. Check out the recent EP/single releases from FSOL and The Chemical Brothers which contain 4 tracks or whatever and are priced at anywhere from $7.99 to $8.99 at various stores. Ridiculous. These should be 5 dollars tops. I don't even bother waiting for the Astralwerks singles anymore (which always seems to turn up after the imports) because there's no price difference. While it probably makes no difference to the shops you buy your records, there are many rural american malls carrying astralwerks releases that don't even have the ability let alone choice of carrying imports. You expect a large stock of Warp imports at your local Camelot? Found plenty of Astralwerks/TVT stuff up in Traverse City, MI. I was shocked at first, but the picture became clearer once I walked out with my hands full. onnow: welcome to lotus land (map) Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong" For reviews, interviews, art & trash http://www.on-it.net/~aaron/ aaron@defiant.on-it.net

IIRC it is illegal for a store to sell an import if there is a domestic version available. therefore, if a store has imports and finds out a domestic is coming, they may mark the import down to either the same price or sometimes even LOWER! i have bought many import albums for less than the regular domestic price because of this. -jon p.s.: "u-ziq" sucks no matter what you pay.

when a domestic version of something is released and it is exactly the same as the import version, they usually drop the price of the import to match the domestic so they can get rid of it. -steve On Tue, 11 Feb 1997, Gonzi (Fresh) wrote:

I wouldn't necessarily point the blame at Astralwerks. I did find their "Werks Like a 12" thing cheap for $7.99, at Media Play. Perhaps Tower, and other chain-stores (and maybe even some mom-n-pop shops), are finally catching on to how popular this music is becoming, and have adjusted their pricing strategies to maximize their profits. After all, if you know people are going to buy the new u-ziq for $11.99, who gives a funk what Astralwerks suggests as the price. Maybe Pete could clarify this, as it is buggin' me too... p.s... as for legality, I don't think imports are "illegal" to sell alongside domestics. Unless there is some bizarre tarriff or FTC rule governing what you can do with imported product once you've (legally) bought it, you should be free to sell it at whatever price you feel you can get people to buy it at. I've seen countless releases lately being sold for twice what the domestic is at, sometimes in the same bin! I must admit I was a little befuddled on this one also. I spend 30 minutes looking around arons for a copy of the domestic Urmur Bile Trax 1&2 CD. Couldn't find it anywhere, then took a stroll thru the imports and found one copy. Lo and behold, it had the new Astralwerks logo on the back. It was priced at around $11.99 and I didn't even think twice about purchasing it. I'm not sure what the gripe is, it's got two eps, 8 tracks and some damn good music (especially vol 2). I wouldn't exactly call it a single... And then Gonzorelli wrote:

Gonzi, you should be HAPPY that there is a lable like Astralwerks around that gives two shits about the music we all love, here in the US. I've 99 percent of their catalog and I've always been pretty happy with their releases. As for the money...Their wax ALWAYS suprises me how cheep (in price) it is. Their cds are usually priced in the right range and they've even put out a few nice budget cds. Stop bitching! word to the mothership, brock np: Gavin Bryars - 'sinking of the titanic'

Cheers to Astralwerks for the efforts, but they're charging too much. BTW, the store I bought the CD from hadn't even gotten the domestic in yet so it wasn't a case of dropping the price. I find it hard to believe Brock that you are suprised at how cheap a CD that has 4 tracks is when it costs $8.99. I have no complaints about their LP prices, which are just right, but the eps & singles are too much... _____ / ,-,_) /,_) (/ RESH Live & Direct from the G-Spot, Orange County, California, USA http://www1.linkonline.net/fresh/fresh.htm

Again, I don't know how you got lucky, but I'm used to paying $8.99 for a single CD. Christ, I usually pay $8 for a 12" single. That's the reason why the singles market in the US is so slow, because there really isn't that dramatic a price different between albums and singles. Look at imports. Here in Canada expect to pay $10.99 for a single, and $29.99 for an album. onnow: v/a "welcome to lotus land" (map) Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong" For reviews, interviews, art & trash http://www.on-it.net/~aaron/ aaron@defiant.on-it.net

Why don't you guys continue your Astralwerks thread in private? I think that most of us will agree that Astralwerks has put out some damn fine releases. I am so use to buying mostly imports, that i don't really squabble over a pricey product as long as it is quality material. Why is Fresh going on about this anyway? Did you feel cheated when you bought the new APHEX TWIN on import and it was a full price cd and only 30 minutes long? William Samuels

The irritating fact is that Astralwerks CD-singles cost $7.99 or $8.99 everywhere I shop, whereas most other CD-singles cost $4.99 or $5.99. Why are they charging more for their CD-singles as a rule? I don't know, but it's definitely starting to get on my nerves. It has nothing to do with the length of the disc ("Setting Sun" is pretty short), it has nothing to do with the genre of music (I can get US CD-singles by Prodigy, Josh Wink and Goldie for $4/5.99), and it has nothing to do with where I buy it, Astralwerks is always $2-3 more expensive on CD-singles. Their full-length CDs are priced normally; why not the CD-singles? -- Adam J Weitzman "Getting [your computer] to work is no more Individual, Inc. difficult than building a nuclear reactor weitzman@individual.com from wristwatch parts using only your teeth." http://www.individual.com - Dave Barry
