in a recent interview related to his ?extreme music from women?
compilation, whitehouse?s william bennett stated that men create according
to stylistic and technological constraints. a man, for example, will
write a ?jungle? track, or create some variant of an existing style, such
as ?techstep? or ?jump-up?, while women tend to create from a more
personal, internal perspective. hence, men may make great albums in a
particular style, but women are more likely to create a more interesting,
less-classifiable work. i can?t vouch for the validity of this insight,
although cultural referents certainly can be found ? it was adam?s
prerogative in genesis to name the animals, the big, phallic tower of
babel arose from a desire to name the heavens. what do the men from
?things to do in denver when you?re dead? do, besides ogle gabrielle
anwar, but say ?give it a name??
so, i admit that this is less relevant to 3ef?s new album than it simply
is on my mind, but the beauty of matt elliot?s body of work at its best is
that you?re not hearing a merely skillful juxtaposition of styles or
pastiche, but a compelling, acontextual idea in development.
third eye foundation?s current sound bears scant resemblance to that of
?semtex? or ?ghost?, although one can still find the layered,
pitch-shifted samples that are alternately scary and retarded (although
making people sound like munchkins is kind of scary, too). ?little lost
soul? is ?you guys kill me?, done right. the production is cleaner, the
beats are more interesting (and, like his pre-?sound of violence? rhythms,
they?re not the defining / limiting quality of the music) and melodies are
much better developed. most striking are the female vocals, which sound
like messages from ghosts, long etched into old 78?s. ?little lost soul?
seems to be the story of just that - encoded echoes of a wayward spectre,
floating through the yellowed walls of genteel haunted houses. hyperbole?
you bet. but third eye foundation has given us a window into a
beautiful, willfully-blurred world of sepia tones and cluttered whispers,
without the endless, soulless lego-ism that has come to dominate
contemporary music (and to think i?d all but given up). nice work, mister
elliot, for rediscovering your feminine side. (o, and the packaging?s very
nice, too)
