Do not underestimate the accuracy of these words! Ligeti's all that and a
wry, bizarre sense of humor too. It isn't all tone-cluster-music/
micropolyphony like Lux Aeterna and Atmospheres--in later works, the
textures are sparser, rhythms are edgier, and detail isn't always subsumed
into a large shape (as in L.A.) but is allowed to speak clearly, and
there's so much of it it's overwhelming. Microtunings in recent years
(Horn trio), and there's a phenomenally, well, "creepy" spot in the Piano
Cto with these ocarinas blowing these fuzzy, out-of-tune, otherworldly
chords. Shivers. Unforgettable. J
