Has anybody heard the new Prince Paul "illbient" album on Wordsound? The possibilities are boggling. I'll probably buy it unheard if I can find it. Miles

Is this the same sort of scatalogical/teen sexual humor that ruined the Dr. Octagon album (for me)? Miles

This is reminding me to ask: I decided on the basis of the descriptions of depraved scatalogical and sexual humor that I probably would not like the Dr. Octagon album very much. However, Mo' Wax released an instrumental version of it (called _Instrumentalyst_ I believe) recently, and I was wondering if someone could describe it. In all the discussion of the lyrics, I wasn't really listening to the discussion of the music on the album because I had already decided not to buy it. -- Adam J Weitzman "Getting [your computer] to work is no more Individual, Inc. difficult than building a nuclear reactor weitzman@individual.com from wristwatch parts using only your teeth." http://www.individual.com - Dave Barry

The PP album is teen scatological humor in many ways, but if you look at most of the tracks as parodies of R&B and hip hop's (non-humorous) obsession with guns and genitals, then it's pretty damn funny stuff. Depends on whether or not the word "context" has any meaning to you. If you want to repair your Dr. Octagon experience, check out his new "Instramentalyst". Hardly any words, mostly just beats. There are some corny samples here and there (like the badly eq'd beethoven), but otherwise it has a pretty nice texture. It has some QBert scratching on it, too, but not as much as you would think would be necessary on an instrumental album -CF

I've given a _Instrumentalyst_ a few cursory spins at the shop. My impression was that it's exactly the same record, sans raps. I suppose it could grow on me, but my first impression is that there's not quite enough going on to hold my interest. On the other hand, the DJ Cam 2CD on Shadow is much better than I expected. DJ Vadim and DJ Cam just might make me regret taking the name of Ninja Tune in vain. What's the word on the new DJ Krush album? I'm a big fan of _Meiso_, but the new one seems to be available only as a very pricey Japanese import. Miles

i've actually only heard the original versions of 3000 and imo the _instrumentalyst_ track doesn't hold up without the vocals. the album as a whole feels monotonous and unharmonious at times.. quite often actually. i'm sure there are ppl who appreciate these kinda weird compositions, but i don't. if u're truly interested, i'd say find it and give it a listen before u spend money on it. on now: sawII -- Oskar Andersson aka Dj Mono - mono@tbm.scicom.se -
