Members: Professional musicians and composers. Cello, violin,
synthethisers, etc.
And a singer similar to Enya and the likes. Though I think she's a lot better.
She can mantain the tone of her voice in a larger spectrum of tones.
Rumours say she was discovered while singing at a balcony hanging wet
clothes, in a traditional neigbourhood in Lisbon. Even though it is
probably not true it mustn't be far from being real.
Their first album was recorded in a small church. The purphose was
capturing the natural echo and reverberation of the place. So it can be
considered a "live" recording.
Their music: Contemporaneous composition based in a portuguese traditional
genre called Fado. Played with classic guitar+portuguese guitar (12
strings) and a solo voice only.
Songs are generally based on the female lead voice accompanied by the
instruments.
All they concerts have sold out everywhere. (Germany, France, UK, Japan, etc.)
They sell more albums in Japan than in Portugal, the Japanese are in love
with them.
In Portugal their live performances are all in Castles, convents, churches,
etc. Because of the mood+ambience and accoustics. Seeing them live in
unforgetable.
Madredeus have several originals on the market, and a live recording (at
least available in Portugal). Their latest recording is the OST of Wim
Wenders latest movie, "Lisboa"
Best song (and best known); "O Pastor" - The shepherd
I think it's a band worth looking for. And I hope it is a great discovery
for you all.
There are several "nonofficial" web sites. Do a search with "madredeus".
There are some of them in english.
PS: I've sent a copy of this message to the ambient mailing list. It seemed
appropriate to me. If it brakes some "rule" my humble apologies.
