Here's a question-What time zone? I'm assuming it's eastern, so I would actually be seeing it at 2AM in Chicago. Que? Spliff.

I'm sorry about the mess I seem to have made on idm, but, I think this issue is at least as valid as anything else on here since this has the potential to greatly affect the future of the of electronic/dance music scene.... I'm sorry for the length. If you think this isn't a valid issue, I'm sorry, please hit your delete key now. let me clairify what I meant in my last post. First off, I make my living sharing what I love with people I don't know. I dj, I make music, I make, for the lack of a better way to put it " raver" clothes, and I own a record store. If the dance scene blows up here I will probably make a lot of money for the year or 2 that we are "in". I know probably better than most of you that electronic music is already popular. I realize that if exposed to it, people will like it. I have given clear cd's to my father in-law, and Move D cd's to my dad. People have come into my shop off the street and bought the music I was playing because it sounds "nice". I would enjoy seeing other people have the same experiences I have I had because of electronic music. Keeping the scene to myself is not something I am worried about. When 10,000 people show up for a rave in nyc it is a little bit late for that. My point is this, take pearl jam for example, when the "alternative" scene first started to pop up, they weren't a part of it. They were guys from lame, major label, heavy metal bands that weren't making it. They quickly adopted a "seattle" sound and quickly became spokespersons for their generation. Now, you have millions of wanna-be pearl jams and millions of people wearing pearl jam shirts, while alot of the original bands that helped create that sound have given up or have been dropped by their labels because their sound is not in anymore. The few original bands left have changed their style to be more commercial just to keep their paychecks coming. And there are millions of people into "alternative" music BECAUSE it the big thing, but only until the next big thing comes along. I would love to see dance music to become popular, in theory, I'll be rich. alot of my friends will become famous, and my sister would be asking for Autechre's phone number instead of the Smashing Pumpkins'. But, more than likely, what will happen is every lame rock band with a failing career would put a "techno" track on their record to try to get a hit, ( like ETBG and jungle) or worse, you will see pre-packaged acts that you have never heard of popping up out of nowhere cranking out watered-down versions of the first one or two "techno" hits at a rate so fast that you wont be able to tell what is good any more and the real artists will be lost in the shuffle only to be fired by their record company and have their careers ended when the next big trend comes along. It's not the popularization of electronic music, or the exposure of techno to a larger audience that worries me, but the potential for the crass media-commercialization of "techno-culture." If we are patient and work at it we could all help to develop an artform that will last at least as long as rock has. I for one would hate to see our future burned up in a quick attempt at exposing ourselves. collinstrange? strange? records 445 e. 9th. ny.ny.10009 212.505.3025 P.S. If you really want to see these videos (and choose not to watch them on MTV), get in touch with me. I have lots on tape, and would be happy to dub you copies if you supply the tape and postage. You should probably check your local listings. We're getting it at 4AM MDT (5AM in Chicago, but you may be on a different feed). The general idea seems to be that it'll run seven hours after the first airing of the Video Music Awards in your area: x:00 PM VMA's start X+3 VMA Postshow X+3.5 VMA Repeats X+6.5 VMA Postshow repeats X+7 AMP -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo)

I just watched my tape of AMP from last night. WOW! I am really excited; "our" music never looked so good. Ok, my 2 cents on AMP... 1) Watching the last 15 minutes of the VMA show made me remember why I hate MTV and TV in general...most people are stupid, have poor taste, no imagination and like to eat lots of shit that some marketing poobutt sells them. 2) Most of the AMP videos were better then the winners of this years VMA, IMHO. The exception was the CB's life is sweet...can you say rock performance video? Sorry but it was quite lame. 3) SECOND BAD VILBEL - recipient of this years "Most Wickedist Shit I've Every Seen" award. Someone should jack Coolio for that stupid "Best Dance Video" award that he confessed he didn't even know why he was getting and send it to Autechre...Job well done boys! 4) TRICKY - Because of the fact that they left in the line "When we fuck, we'll hear beats", some upper level uptight anal suit really didn't watch any of these videos...what that means, I have no idea. Sure to piss off all those rap stars that get so many bleeps... 5) Aphex - Although I didn't know it at the time, I have already seen the video for ON...only MTV stold it for something else and replace the music with some other crap...this pissed me off a bit. 6) General stuff - Audio quality SUCKED...no high end, sounded like it was in a cardboard box under water...looked down at the EQ thingie at one point and it looked like a big ski ramp...bass thru the roof, highs nonexistent. My friend asked why it sounded so shit, all I can guess is all source tapes delivered to MTV were crap old 3/4"...not exactly HI-FI. The only reason that you don't notice with Foofighters is that stuff sucks anyways. 7) MTV didn't really spend much time on the AMP intro, bumpers and outro. solarizing some stupid old cartoons doesn't cut it today when you can do bad ass shit with a $1000 home PC and a 3D package...I've shit out better visuals in my sleep. To sum it all up, I enjoyed the show...sorry if I sound like an asshole but I'm telling it like I (and the others who were present) see it. I would love to see "the music we all love" get the recognition it deserves...I hope this is a positive step, but I'm still not sold. this is brock signing off....

We're happy people are finally getting to see it, 's been locked away too long, a few ad agencies have taken an interest in Chris Cunningham (it's director) as a result of the recent screening apparently. Have they been showing the Donkey Rhubarb video too? Rumour has it we might be giving away one of the 6ft Aphex teddy bears in a 'Richard D. James LP' competition... Which I don't have *ANY* details of before you ask. g.

hehe..I noticed there was no consistency for the times people were saying it was on so i just recorded from 1-5 am and it's in there somewhere. Haven't checked to timer to see exactly what time it was on for the west coast. But I think it's going to be repeated anyway isn't it? T.

TV Guide on line was off on this one. It was supposed to be on at 3am Pacific on MTV West and 3am Eastern MTV East. In both cases it started a bit late due to post MTV music video award interviews dragging on. _john ---This Sig. Absolutely. I thought Autechre came through tops with the best "implementation" video, making sense of some of the noise on the track. Of course, the sound sucked royally... had to listen to the track on CD after to remember what the proper track sounds like. Worst sound IMO was the Chemical Bro track... vocals, did someone say vocals???

i thought the aphex video was a bit silly, but that's not surprising. kind of reminded me of the monkees, if they had a heavy surrealist influence.

i didn't like snivilisation that much, but i need to give it a few more listens. i think "in sides" is pretty brilliant, on a level with "the box," although that kind of seems like the showpiece of the album. the double-disc version is cool, nice to have the 28-minute version of "the box" as well. gymkata! gee, i thought insides was really quite lame, with maybe one or two listenable tracks. if you want a MUCH better album (and i do mean album, as in "set of tracks that work together to take you somewhere") that is at least somewhat stylistically related to orbital, check out Everest by Off And Gone. to my mind, this is what orbital could be if they had a much better grasp of melody and sound design.

since everybody needs to get their 2 cents in on this one, my ordering would be: snivilisation, orbital 1, insides, orbital 2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jon Drukman jsd@cyborganic.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Out of any of these, the ones that would probably catch on to the masses would be this heinous video and the Tricky, mostly because it would remind people of Portishead.

Great video.
I wouldn't call it "low quality video". If you've heard the track then you'll understand why all the video effects of "interference". Basically the video consisted of shots of what was supposed to be an alien (actually looked like it was in a Tube station) and others of a four legged robot or something with a fifth leg/claw. It looked as though the stationary shots of the robot were of a model and the action shots were DEFINATELY computer animation (the action shots were of the claw and other parts opening or coming out of the robot). Cut in with all of this were various shots of machinery and shots of a possible London Underground station. What gave it the possible "low quality" feel was the effect of video interference every time that distorted noise in the track came in. It gave the effect that you were watching some "discovered" video of an alien and it's space craft I suppose. My other feelings about the video's... I know I'm going to piss off all of you Underworld fans but I found their videos to be about as uninteresting and unoriginal as their music. I think the second video was a tad better than the first (sorry but I don't remember the names) as the first was simply edited shots of a live performance at a rave and the second was like their album cover of dubnobass... I'm sorry but I think a monkey could do better than chopped up edits from a live performance and words and scribbles flying across the screen. One of my personal favorites was the Sun Electric video. Nick Phillip did a great job with the computer animation on that one. I also really enjoyed the animation in the Spacetime Continuum video. The On video was weird and cool but I got the impression that in the end, the director had only half as much footage as needed to cover the length of the track so the sequences went forwards and backwards, over and over... The Chemical Brothers video had an interesting idea but I think the follow through lacked a bit. It was very eighties feeling to me. There were lots of cheesy sets and silly costumes. The Tricky video was beautiful. I really liked it even though it was the most slick and produced looking of all of the others (read, designed for a commercial audience). It had some incredible footage and I especially like the armored troop carrier with "Tricky" on the side in the end. The Orbital video was fantastic. The concept and follow through were incredible. When a video brings you to weird ideas as this one does about life zipping by you, you know it was done well. I was very impressed. The FSOL video was alright. I think against the backdrop of all these other videos it paled a bit. On its own I think it would stand out a bit better. It really didn't go very far with the idea though. It was all underwater shots of some guy blowing small air bubbles and a girl with a white dress. Of course there was the occasional 3D computer graphic thrown in (the had to get their average SGI work in there somehow). The Ken Ishi was by far the most brilliant. It was like a short story version of a Japanese Anime OAV. There was no solid plot as it was very abstract but the colors and character design and imagery were FANTASTIC! Well, there you go. Did I miss any? As was said before, the interludes were pretty uninventive and it was well worth staying up till 4am to cut out the lame commercials (two different love song/easy rock, order-by-phone, special-TV-offer CD collections... _bleah_) _ -robert | |___ ____ ____ _____ | |_ \ / -__/ / _/ | _ \ __________ |_____/ \___\ |_| | |__/ / -studio- \ _________________________________ |_| http://icse1.ucsd.edu/~rcurlee/ \

Well, I didn't mean it was shot in low-quality, just that was the effect it gave. :)

I agree comletely. I don't know if the anime stuff was taken from something else or produced for this video, but it was some of the most intense and coolest animation stuff I've seen. Anybody know who the artist was and if he's done anything else? -matt

Talking about an US MTV-program is not really interesting, esp. as we f.e. in europe see those vidoes (MTV/VIVA) since years. Maybe instead of writing what videos are cool for you and if your VCR recorded all, you could discuss the good and bad of techno videos in general. peace, harald

I strongly disagree. Firstly, I'm interested in copies of videotapes of anything Stateside that looks really good. Secondly, I'm glad to see that our cousins over the water are getting it. However, I find the apparent desire to remain "underground" a bit baffling. Techno has been mainstream, more or less, in Europe for a few years and it hasn't stopped the leaders from making good stuff. Andrew.

This goes both ways, though. I remember the strain that hit the list when the Pirelli tire ad with the Aphex bit in it appeared in the UK, several months prior to it's release in the states. And then the Biosphere "Novelty Waves" Levi's commercial. We are all just a bit shocked and floored to have such music on tv! :) Andrew -- Andrew Bennett abennett@hyperreal.com, abennett@cruzio.com http://taz.hyperreal.com/~abennett/

Um, yeah sure. Does that mean when the European list members talk about all the great parties they went to like the Warp parties or saw so and so live that I can pipe in and say, "Hey man this is an international list and it's not fair to talk about your damn party here..." I don't think so. Besides the conversation IS turning to the content of the videos and not just the listing. Sheesh. _ -robert And so you bloody well should! My excitement at seeing On for the first time (end of 1993) knew no bounds. Although I've seen lots of idm videos since then, I seem to keep missing Anvil Vapre. Orbital and Underworld are on MTV 'all the time' these days; which, I must admit, lessens my excitement somewhat - especially when they're immediately followed by some meaningless chart topper. Two things: MTV is now cool again in my book. FSOL are now cool again in my book. Just caught My Kingdom, by FSOL, on MTV. Never thought I'd get to use those three words in the same sentence ever. Finally, FSOL have broken free of the computer graphics chains, and actually created an extension to their ideas. The FSOL blob takes a journey around London, taking on various forms, doing interesting things, while the people around it go about their rather curious "video-like" lives. Of course, it had to fade into Poison. Took me about 3 seconds to realize I have been good by saving $67 on _not_ buying the Prodigy video on Japanese import from the local Tower. I was quite shocked when they put up the subtitle indicating the video by the Prodigy, cause they flashed it up a good _30 seconds_ into the next vid, Sugar Is Sweeter, by CJ Bolland. Well, consider this the charming ineptitude which characterizes many pioneering efforts, such as the college radio stations which changed my life: Ithaca College's station (made Cornell's Top 40 monkeyspanking seem like a joke) Drexel University WKDU: "Free Music for an Enslaved City" - used to be a punk station - now it's almost continuous d&b, trance, and trip hop That damn 103.3 from Princeton, also known as the classical/d&b station Etc. Etc. Anyway, we can endure some hacked segues to finally experience some artistic vids, to music that was actually worthy of a vid. 3

So, this was off Destroyer? I remember that album being pretty hardcore in comparison to this.

no - "22:24" was the a-side of the Alec Empire 7" in the DHR/Grand Royal series. does it 'scare' anyone else that such harsh and uncompromising music is being played on MTv?! something seems wrong there... and i don't want to get into a whole 'our music'/'their music' debate, but . . . it's Alec Empire f'r crying out loud?!?! the guy who just recorded the album Stockhausen never got around to making (_Les Etoiles Des Files Mortes_ on Mille Plateaux!) not exactly eMpTy-V fodder. ...and the Boo Radleys couldn't even get ARRESTED here in the States! what a weird world. No it doesn't 'scare' me at all cos Europe MTV plays stuff like that all the time ever since Techno became popular in Europe. And I can't find anything 'wrong' with that. Every music style should be played on MTV. I don't have a prob with watching experimental videos on MTV. Marc
