He will be up in Vancouver BC tommorrow night (Wenesday) at Marrs with the Exist Dance act Off and Gone. Show starts at 9:30 or so. I am pretty sure he is playing live. I have not seen flyers or anything but I have been told by others on the net he will be there, he better be cause I am traveling a good 400 miles to see him, on horseback ;) Derek

Hello. I've seen a few Plastikman bits & pieces hanging around and wondered if they were worth buying. The only previous contact I've had with RH's work is the FUSE 'Dimension Intrustion' album on Warp. The style is somewhat similar, but Richie Hawtin's Plastikman alias tends to focus more on minimalism, 303, and slight variations in EQ. The tracks are very hypnotic and still lure your body into motion. If I were you, I'd pick up both the CDs _Musik_ and _Sheet One_. Yeah, I bought his _Asteroid_ CD about a month ago and was quite impressed. He is definitely very similar to Plastikman. Despite the fact that I like the disc, I can't help but notice that Emmanuel Top isn't quite as innovative as Plastikman, IMHO. | E r i c | [mail] franse@engr.arizona.edu | | F r a n s | [web] http://intermix.engr.arizona.edu/~franse |

Plastikman fans or those who want to check him out might want to pay visit to your local Sam Goody (and like chains) In the clearance / cutbins today I found sheet one (with the very cool acid cut sheet!!!) for $1.99 on cd... also picked up Chapterhouse Blood Music for $.99 (heard this name a million times, figured $.99 I'd take the chance) plus a Fathom sampler (Robert Rich, etc) Thought it might be worth a mention... brap@sonic.net /// occasional noisy soundfiles (np: burundi challenge.rm) http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ blackdog, vvm, whitezone-l, slipdisc, radiora.ram C.Gosselin, 1547 Boston Court #7, Santa Rosa, CA 95405

for what it's worth, it's the blood music remixes that get talked about so much. global communications on the 1's and 0's and it's mighty great. "pentamerous metamorphosis" is the name of this long out of print cd and 2 track 12". though the cd you found is ok, imo, for a chapterhouse album, i was totally stoked to see that the remixes are going to be rereleased. eric onnow: tekknobox

I thought maybe consumed was a downtempo cd much like RDJ made SAWII. No - consumed is a definite departure from type. The other plastikman records are fairly straightahead minimal acid techno workouts. Not screaming acid craziness for the most part but subtle building tracks with funky 909 (or is it 808?) grooves. Really nice stuff which I enjoy a lot - but I prefer the more experimental fully minimalist sound of consumed. Cheers Andrew C.

no they're more acidy with lots high pitched chirping and louder thump thump beats, not as subconscious as consumed or as dark ...if you like that then try _concept 1 : 96CD_ by Hawtin as well, same vibe to it. spaul

also of course remixes of the same, by thomas brinkmann. i gather that his treatment of the original is fairly minimal.. i am told that he played the original records on a custom turntable with a second, adjustably-positioned stylus. err.. maybe this has already been discussed, but does anyone know quite why, apart from the conceptual or visual aesthetics, one might prefer une telle hydraique tt to.. say.. two turntables or a simple delay? also, if someone could point me to a t. brinkmann disco-graphy, i'd be much obliged. thank you, yon

The Concept 1 vr cd is actually a Richie Hawtin cd remixed/reconstructed entirely by Thomas Brinkmann. And I second Sally's recommendation of it. It will easily be one of my top 5 releases of '98. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed that thomas brinkmann will be doing a live performance here in cleveland or somewhere close so i can see him work his reconstructive magic. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

And for anyone in/near Canada, who can pick up CBC's BraveNewWaves radio program (12am-3am, mon-fri) I believe that Richie Hawtin will be on the show thursday for an interview... q

I have to admit that Consumed has grown on me, but if you think it goes a bit too far (and have a yen for earlier Plastikman), Artifakts (bc) will really take your breath away. As Richie explains in the liner notes, Artifakts includes tracks he recorded during 1995-96 (the "bc" stands for "before Consumed"), while trapped in the frozen north of Canada -- well, okay, just across the river from Detroit. I shouldn't commit myself too far, since I've given it only one and a half listens, but this *may* be my favorite Plastikman yet, a great balance between Muzik and the BC-inspired stuff on Consumed. .John. dont you mean "artifakts" as opposed to "abstrak"? if so, "artifakts" is actually the album after "musik" and it shows. lots of peepy 303's and stuff yet with a more surreal atmosphere. very minimal as well. "consumed" on the other hand is hardly dancey at all compared to the rest of his stuff. "consumed" has lots of thick 303 basslines and sounds that phase in and out. tons and tons of echo and crazy far off sounds. lots of people loved and hated it. blair ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

"Artifakts (BC)" is the bridge between Muzik and Consumed. You can hear Plastikman talk about this on http://www.globalserve.net/~cognition hope this helps. andrew

Yes. All Plastikman/Richie Hawtin is enjoyed by me, but Consumed is the true masterpiece. Haven't heard Abstrak. Could you mean Artifakts? It is a compilation of tracks that he produced between Musik and Consumed. Also check out my other favorite, Concept 1. -Carter (going on 25 and, surprising to some, female) At 02:31 PM 1/6/99 -0800, you wrote:

Actually, after hearing Richie Hawtin spin the tracks off consumed into his set, I'd have to disagree with your comment about the danceability of it. It can be taken both ways I suppose. But having a wall of speakers pumping out the massive bass rhythms of consumed would probably alter anyones view of it. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
