Damon Fairclough 04/12/96 09:48 I'm not sure if this has maybe been answered already, 'cos half of digest 863 which I presume contained this correspondence was missing, so apologies if it has. But... "James" <JSEO@us.oracle.com> writes: >Not sure about a new DR book, but Tomato is coming out with "Process: A Tomato Project", a book of random Tomato creations, I'm guessing. -- There was supposed to be a DR book called 'New And Used: The World Of The Designers Republic' out in May '96 to mark the company's 10th anniversary. However, they've basically been too busy to do the book (!) and I don't think it'll see the light of day for quite a while yet. It's been commissioned by Booth Clibborn Publications in the UK who publish very high quality graphic art books. For people like me who are desperate for this book to surface eventually, you can rest assured that when it does, it's going to look chuffin' wonderful. As I understand it, DR are not just publishing a load of past work, but they're doing 'remixes' and stuff specially for the book which is why they need some time to work on it. Just for the record... personal DR faves of mine are: Age Of Chance - 'One Thousand Years Of Trouble' album sleeve (shite record though...) various - 'Blechsdottir' CD sleeve (this one we all know and love) Krush - 'House Arrest' 12" single sleeve (early Brit-House. Top stuff.) Junk - 'Messiahs Of The Pop Raunch' 12" single sleeve (bollocks country rock from Yorkshire) 3D Sissy poster (the cute Sissy icon as featured on Blechsdottir, but rendered in 3D. Fucking great) I've just remembered though... there's a huge wedge of a book called 'Localizer 1.0' which is about the European techno scene, and it features all sorts of articles, designs and stuff connected to labels, fashion designers, design agencies etc. It was published last autumn and it's got quite a number of DR and WARP pages - about a third of the book's in English, rest in German, but it's dead glossy and lovely. Some of the history's a bit suspect and it's very Germany-centric, but worth getting if you can a) find it, and b) afford it. Actually, I could go on for ages so I'll pack it in now. Thanks for listening. If you were. Damon. Damon.Fairclough@psygnosis.co.uk

I had a quick look thru my bins to refresh my memory: Tons of warp stuff: LFO - ALL RAC - ALL Autechre LP's (& 12's?) Black Dog Productions - 'bytes' RDJ - 'on' and 'ventolin' Jake Slazenger - 'das ist ein...' & 'nautilius' b12 - 'time tourist' speedy j - gspot I can't remember, but I think they did the whole 'AI' series. others: Sun Electric - all Speed Jack - Surge YMO - 'technodon mixes II' TIME recordings - all ORB - all before 'pomme fritz' I know there's quite a few more I've forgot about! Designers Republic is the shit! Related to this is the fact that I've always loved psygnosis...Those guys have always been on the top of my list! I've been a strong supporter all the way back in the good old Amiga days (RIP;-). Like Warp, they always had pretty good taste in music (except for some of the early stuff!) and the smarts to go with DR designs. Plus their games are the best! Props out to all the heads at both Designers Republic and Psygnosis! over and out, brock np: the orb - 'assassin cubed' (which came with a DR sticker I lost 3 cars ago...)

It's probably easier to list the warp artwork the they haven't done. about 30 of 46ish albums and about 75 of the 85ish singles. They are opening a couple of exhibitions round about now actually: upstairs at the Blue Note, Hoxton Square, London. opening night is nest tuesday. and then at home in Sheffield at their (and our) most frequented bar type thing 'The Forum', starting near the end of December for two months, this looks like becoming an annual thing, after the successful 'new and used culture' exhibition there this time last year. worth a visit to either. g.

Off the top of my head, stuff that you should be able to see fairly easily in any half-decent record emporium... - As someone's already mentioned, virtually all the Orb back catalogue up to Pomme Fritz. - All Autechre releases on Warp. - All LFO releases on Warp. - Polygon Window's 'Surfing On Sine Waves' - Black Dog's 'Bytes' - Nightmares On Wax 'A Word Of Science' - Artificial Intelligence comps. 1 and 2. - PlayStation games Wipeout and Wipeout 2097 (called Wipeout XL in the States, although the American releases don't have DR packaging. They did style the in-game icons and stuff though.) - Pulp's releases between 1992 (when they signed to Warp's indie off-shoot Gift) and mid '95. - Supergrass' 'I Should Coco' - All releases to date by Moloko - The React label's 'True People-Detroit Techno' compilation (also a fair bit of other React stuff) - Some stuff on R+S including Speedjack's 'Surge' and Joey Beltram's 'Classics' Going back in time to some more obscure stuff... - Virtually all releases on Sheffield's FON label, which in many ways was the pre-cursor to Warp. - Releases from Age Of Chance on both FON and Virgin. - Virtually all the original Warp 12 inchers including the 'corporate' lilac styling - And the Warp logo. Of course. Call me sad, call me a trainspotter, call me geek, nerd, nob head, pillock, twat or shit breath. I don't care. This knowledge makes me happy. And I know I'm not alone on this list... I have a composite proof of an early cover for their book, which I've had for almost 2 years, now. They've been working on it for some time, and the only reason it's delayed is the fact that they're sooo busy working on stuff that actually pays at the time! The book will be interesting, because they hope to include a poster or two, plus possibly a disk including some of their fonts. The book was originally supposed to come out in 1994, if I remember correctly. Ian.

Would have been better if they had used the same matt finish card as Catatonic, instead of the dull gloss that attracts those bloody fingerprints! Most of my favourite sleeves use matt finish, Jimi Tenor's LP, Durutti Column's LC, most of the Clear stuff for example. Makes the whole thing look a lot more attractive, I think.

That was the point - they're both DR sleeves! So they probably did SAW 1 too, another one I like a lot. Cheerio! NP - Sketch For Summer - The Durutti Column
