The seminal Planet E label has just released a compilation of rare Carl Craig tracks under his Paperclip People guise. The release, called "The Secret Tapes of Dr. Eich," features 12 tracks of smooth sample-laden techno including classics like Oscillator and The Climax. This is a "must have" for those who really know and love techno. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

That's a pretty loaded statement there, and I'm afraid I must disagree. For me... when I think of good techno, Carl Craig is filed under lame and undesirable. The only thing I've ever heard of his that I actually liked was his Bug In the Bassbin 12", but that's not really techno is it? onnow: alt.frequencies (worm interface) Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong." Carl Craig is the BOMB!! You obviously haven't heard very much of his material. The Psyche/BFC, 69, and Landcruising cds are great!! I have only found on Carl Craig release I didn't like and that was a single under the name Urban Culture. B i l l S a m u e l s w l s @ U . A r i z o n a . E D U

Ho ho ho :-) And this coming from an Industrialist, no less. The best "Industrial" (quote-unquote) music I've heard in the last 4 years was easily Carl Craig's live gig at Plantasia in L.A. New Year's Eve 1994. Completely blew my socks off and left my jawbone dragging on the concrete. Maybe "Landcruising" wasn't the greatest album ever made but it was certainly pretty damned decent and his 69 stuff is just awesome. His DJ Kicks CD is great too, as is the one-sided Bug In The Bassbin remix 12". I don't want to start a "tastes great"/"less filling" argument here, but I gotta stand up for my Detroit homie :-) - Greg

I totally agree with you... Carl Craig isn't that "cult" techno to me, I don't like it at all and oftens reminds me of bad commercial stuff... And yepz indeed, he's also filed under "lame & undesirable"... If some one would give it as a gift I think I wouldn't accept it :) .%. WeeZ .%. WeeZeR@dma.be .%. MiNDVieW, rC & NeTFuNK! To all those deeming it necessary to dis Carl Craig: Just *a few* of his releases: Carl Craig - At les 69- Desire Psyche - Crackdown BFC - Galaxy Carl Craig + Sarah Gregory - As time goes by Paperclip People - Throw Innerzone Orchestra - Bug in the bassbin 69 - 4 Jazz funk classics Just *a few* of his remixes: Dave Angel - Airborne (Carl Craig's drums suck remix) Incognito - Out of the storm (Carl Craig's Planet E special) Brian Transeau - Moment of truth (Carl Craig's Urban Affair dub) Domina - Domina Sueno Latino - Sueno Latino La Funk Mob - Ravers suck our sound... While it is everyone's right to like or not like Carl Craig's music, it is absolute bollocks to call him 'formulaic' or 'commercial'! Take a look, or better yet, listen to the above list and then tell me what the formula is or where he has gone commercial. If this is defined as being commercial, I can name a few other artists that are commercial as well.... Carl Craig is one of the *very* *very* few artists who is continuously innovating his sound, constantly seeking new directions. How many artists can you name that are as versatile as Carl Craig? Herbert, AFX and Moritz von Oswald are all I can think of. Otto, thoroughly pissed off at such ignorance

I'm in disbelief! Carl Craig has done more than anybody to make the techno scene interesting! How can you say you don't like Microlovr, From Beyond, Drama with Derrick May, Chicken Noodle Soup, Evolution (or It's A Shame depending on what tracklist you consult).. Or just about any other record he's done. Carl Craig has certainly influenced more people than Derrick May, and he's the most diverse Detroit producer. Personally I think Bug In The Bassbin is one of his worst. No structure, especially on the very disappointing Jazz Mix - I hear better jazz than that every day on the radio. Cheerio!
