skam08 boards of canada - high scores ep 12" press release says thus "the band originates from the north east coast of scotland (locals!!), they began recording on home hi fi around 1983.. the main duo of mike and marcus have stuck to a homemade sound...they can be caught playing live on january 17th at roadhouse (manchester) with plaid...you are welcome to join us..." what does it sound like then? pretty diverse in the skam tradition..obviously comparisons to gescom are inevitable..but on the whole is more structured and linear with very much an abstract hip hop flavour as opposed to pure electronica... opener "hi scores" rides in on a low slung distorted hip hop beat , with melencholic chord washes and random bursts of radio intereferance....the sounds of late night drinking dens invade the next track "turquiose hexagon sun" , a stacatto beat jitters over masked barely audiable conversation whilst gently tinkering keys create a cool atmosphere, would not be out of place on a mo wax compilation.."nlagon" takes the computer funk of hashim/cybetron and pours on a disorientating mixture of spiralling keys and unintelligable gibbered vocals.....'June 9th' keeps the funk flavour, but with a looser structure , one push and the track composed of inverted electro beats and soothing melodies would fall apart..."See ya Later" is hip hop for the 21st century , tight delayed drum loop , earth quake low end and again the track nestles on a delicate melodic structure. ..slow mo beats and haunting melodies dominate the last track 'Everything you do is a Balloon' , a classical orchestra conducted by DJ Premier... reviewer@4thworld records *cutting edge mail order* http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/4thworld/
