And saying that 'quality counts, not quantity' is no excuse whatsoever. The truth is, that shiny space on the CD is wasted space, a wasted opportunity. Maybe RDJ hasn't got enough good music to make a record that uses all the space of a CD (right..) or Warp think a really short album is a funky punky statement (how fucking pompous that would be!)... Or, because they know this album will sell by the truckload even if Aphex recorded himself snoring on a Sunday morning with the 'Children Talking' LP playing backwards on a dansette, that they could save themselves some cash on the vinyl manufacturing run by only doing one disc. <cough> Cheerio!
