I was wondering if some kind soul would share their thoughts on the Orb's "Auntie Aubrey..." double-CD which I nearly bought this weekend. My uncertainty came from looking at the artists remixed therein -- not exactly my cup of tea. So my question is are the remixes radical enough that it feels like an Orb record [in the way of "muZiq vs. the Auteurs"], or do you have to like the originals to dig the remixes? Thanks. Brian

my review of this in the new URB (with dj shadow on the cover) is more explanatory, but my quick recommendation to you is this: if you're a big Orb trainspotter, and you have most of the bigger landmark mixes on this (keiichi suzuki etc) then skip it. the other stuff is crap. patterson couldn't license all he wanted to for this one (another is supposedly in the works) so he had to fill it up...but if you haven't got this stuff then by all means dive in. mikebee

Have you ever had the pleasure of seeing the good Dr. Alex spin a set? He can do hard, straight-up dance stuff, but obviously is more known for ambience. Well the Aubrey double pack of remixes is kind of like him spinning a 2 hour ambient set. That said, no, you don't have to like or even know the original tunes to enjoy the hell out of it. The remixes in some cases leave the original tunes unrecognizable, and all--the whole of both discs-- is unmistakably Orb-ed out. Smashing, actually. But wait! There's more! The insert book has a really nice essay on what writing a piece about the Orb is like and also a wierd and nice stream-of-consciousness bit kind of regarding/emulating the music. Buy it. You'll love it. enjoy, K
