To me Ninja Tune is not Trip Hop. To me trip hop is that formulaic DJ Icey-type shit that goes: 1-2-3-4-sample-5-6-7-8-sample-sample 1-2-3-4-sample-5-6-7-8-sample-sample 1-2-3-4-sample-5-6-7-8-sample-sample 1-2-3-4-sample-5-6-7-8-sample-sample 1-2-3-4-sample-5-6-7-8-sample-sample 1-2-3-4-sample-5-6-7-8-sample-sample 1-2-3-4-sample-5-6-7-8-sample-sample 1-2-3-4-sample-5-6-7-8-sample-sample

I am a latino and I love those 2 records. Especially being from Ecuador and hearing the blend of traditional Andes instruments with electronic instruments. WOW! Sorry Pedro, but I got to disagree with you on that one. I wouldn't call what you described above triphop, I'd just call it repetitive shit. I take it your from Miami, so you must know that Icee/Miami Bass style well...It's not triphop, it's too way to fast to be called that. We call it 'funky breaks' out here on the west coast and like it or not, it moves people on the dancefloor. I'll admit it, I've got just about every record Icee's put out. Most people love'em, the same way most people love house music. I'd call the stuff on Ninja Tune, trip-hop, as far as anything is...I'd even say that hands down its some of the best trip-hop there is on the planet. Some call triphop, hiphop with out the rap. Well I say, Crap on a bat, if my momma ain't fat... An old quote I found:
quoted 5 lines "I hate trip-hop! I don't even know what trip-hop means - if it's The Dust> "I hate trip-hop! I don't even know what trip-hop means - if it's The Dust >Brothers then eat my shit, because they're the worst cunts ever. They just do >samples, really, which I never do. But I like some of the Mo'Wax stuff, some of >that's quite deep." >
-Luke Vibert Well now, we all know Luke's been been doing some samples nowdays too ('smoke a joint' and the Amen Break come to mind). Really, all that I've said is bullshit, the main reason is that I call this stuff trip-hop for lack of a better word. Some people call all electronic music 'house' in the same fashion. I call it all techno or just electronic music...It's just semantics! So, bottom line, if you like 'down-tempo breakbeat on a funked out, smooth & jazzy tip' check out: Artist WagonChrist - 'Throbbing Pouch' (this man can do no wrong by me!) Naked Funk - 'Valium' (another fav around my house) Kitachi - Everything (more on a dub tip) Skylab/Howie B - Everyting (check out butt meat?!?) Nightmares on Wax - Evertying (Smoker's Delight!) Depth Charge - Everthing (especially Nine Deadly Venoms) Palmskin Productions - Everything (especially Remixelr and the beast) Strange Brew - (Wow! Who is this? I want more!) Labels React - 'Dope on Plastic/Wax' series - All, especially DOP 2 Mo Wax - Most everything, ie: RPM, Dj Shadow, U.N.K.L.E, Funk Mob, Attica Blues Skint - lots of good stuff, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Midfield General, Fatboy Slim PussyFoot - lots of good stuff also Pork - more good stuff... and of course, Anything on Ninja Tune! Hope this helps, brock np: The London Funk Allstars Present: Flesh Eating Disco Zombies vs The Bionic Hookers from Mars (and yes, it's as badass as the title!)

Granted that repetitive shit can take on many forms from house to trance to hip-hop, but what people out here in South Florida call Trip Hop sounds just like that (well, maybe a little less creative). They do call it Funky Breaks sometimes too. I just can't even compare it to the Ninja Tune stuff. In those records there is no foreground and no background. It all morphs into one and beats give way to one another. Simply awesome!

I am from Miami and I grew up going to parties where The Mighty Miami Bass was played all night (Luke Skywalker and the 2 Live Crew, 95 South, Gucci Crew, Tigra and Bunny, etc, etc, etc...). Maybe that's why I'm so truamtized against it. I wouldn't call Icey Miami Bass at all.

People in South Florida use both terms interchangeably. I don't dig it but respect the fact that like you said "it moves people on the dancefloor". Different strokes for different folks.

I love some house, the deeper the better, but to me Icey is not a very good musician. His tracks are simplistic, repetitive, and worse of all formulaic. Then again this is just my humble opinion.

Label it what you will. I love this music and if it's trip hop then I love *this kind* of trip hop.

I love is remix of 2-Player's "Extreme Possibilities".

I just got their C/D sampler yesterday as a way to check out their stuff. I dig it. A lot!

Trip Hop was a term invented by mainstream critics to describe any interesting funky break-beaty techno offshoot that they happen to like. Of course the musicians themselves will resent that label, since it lumps them into some random amorphous group that's defined by rock critics, for Christ's sake. For the sake of compartmentalization, I call it abstract hip-hop, which is what MoWax seems to have started calling *their* stuff. And yes, NinjaTunes puts out the best examples of that stuff, whatever you want to call it. -Phil [----------] [---] [-----] [-----] [-----] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [--------] [-----] [-----] [---] [-----] [----------] Home is where the stereo is!

I'd call the stuff on NINJA TUNE, Jigsaw Jazz (to quote Beck). -- Simon McGuire <expsrm@cascade.santos.com.au> Geologist SANTOS
