I’ve noticed in the last six months there have been many posts asking about essential or watershed electronic releases. here are nine each in five loosely defined genres i’d consider essential. I could probably list another 205 or so, which I do intend to do on a website at some point in time. Detroit Techno: BFC/Psyche: Assorted Pieces 1989-1990 CD (Planet E) The Martian: Red Planet CD (Red Planet) Derrick May: Innovator 2CD (Transmat) Kevin Saunderson: Faces and Phases 2CD (Planet E) UR: Sonic EP (Underground Resistance) Kenny Larkin: Azimuth CD (Warp) Robert Hood: Minimal Nation 2EP (M-Plant) Model 500: Sonic Sunset CD (R&S) Drexciya: The Quest 2CD (Submerge) Melodic Techno: B12: Electro-Soma CD (Warp) As One: Reflections CD (New Electronica) Black Dog Productions: Bytes CD (Warp) Reload: A Collection of Short Stories CD (Infonet) Spacetime Continuum: Emit Ecaps CD (Astralwerks) Polygon Window: Surfing on Sine Waves CD (Warp) Fugue/Nuron split 12” (Likemind) Balil: Parasight 12” (Rising High) Phenomyna: Explained CD (A.R.T.) Tech-House: John Beltran: Earth and Nightfall CD (R&S) Basic Channel CD (Basic Channel) Detroit Escalator Company: Soundtrack 313 CD (Ferox) Maurizio CD (Maurizio) Lil’ Louis: From the Mind of Lil’ Louis CD (FFRR) Phuture: Acid Tracks 12” (Trax) Dettinger: Intershop CD (Kompakt) Larry Heard: The Prologue 2CD (Distance) Jamie Read: End of the Beginning CD (Fragmented) Ambient: The KLF: Chill Out CD (Wax Trax!) Global Communication: 76:14 CD (Dedicated) Tetsu Inoue: Ambiant Otaku CD (FAX) Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works, Volume II 2CD (Warp) Jet Chamber 1 CD (FAX) Amorphous Androgynous: Tales of Epherdina CD (Astralwerks) From Within 2 CD (FAX) Manuel Gottsching: E2-E4 CD (Spalax) Dreamfish CD (FAX) Compilations: The Philosophy of Sound and Machine CD (A.R.T./Rephlex) Virtual Sex CD (Buzz) Techno! 1&2 2CD (Ten/Virgin) Intergalactic Beats CD (Planet E) Panic In Detroit CD (Buzz) Artificial Intelligence CD (Warp) RetroTechno LP (Network) Interstellar Fugitives CD (Underground Resistance) The Theory of Evolution CD (Warp) BTW, if you need _one_ release, it has to be Derrick May's "Innovator". Started everything modern, in my opinion, and still the best. But which track? "Strings of Life" or "The Beginning"? That's a big question.
