I have to step out to agree AND disagree. The music selection is awesome but the mixing is SO poor it's hardly unlistenable. Same goes for the Carl Craig DJ Kicks Mix-great selection-shitty mixing. This actually brings up a question that I've been meaning to ask all you heads: How can a "big name" DJ get away with putting out a "mix" cd that completely utterly totally sucks? How can these dj's consciously place samples or other bits between tracks faded together and call it a mix? How can they mismatch beats? Wouldn't you expect someone who makes great music to know the difference between what sounds good and what is complete crap? I have witnessed some of my favorite producers DJ at parties and mix so poorly it's embarrassing. Any thoughts on this? Any similar observations? Shimone "Zenon M. Feszczak" wrote:

i'm sure someone will step up with exceptions, but invariably producers are terrible dj's. i thought stacy pullen and carl craig were dj's before they were producers, so i can't explain that, but i've been disappointed every single time some promoter has thought that they should get juan atkins or someone, even if he's not playing live. eric

Huh, I've never noticed a problem in the mixing on the Stacey Pullen CD. Maybe we're getting into a subjective debate. I've heard Stacey do sets ranging from adequate to among the best I've ever heard - he overshadowed Derrick May when they played here a few years back. Carl's moved the focus to live performances, and doesn't DJ nearly so much nowadays. Juan's primarily a producer, but he tends to have amazing programming/track selection skill. When it gets down to it, I'd rather listen to a DJ who fumbles a beat from time to time yet plays amazing tracks that a smooth/tricky as fuck technician playing homogenous tracks. I don't understand what anyone could find wrong with the mixing on Stacey Pullen's DJ kicks cd...in fact, the cd was admittedly perfected/enhanced with studio effects. The Carl Craig cd isn't really beatmixed...its simply segued together. The tracks rock, indeed, but I can definitely see people having issues with Craig's DJing on that cd. In my opinion, though, if one is going to pan any of the DJ Kicks CDs, my choice would be the first one: CJ Bolland's mix. Now, that cd is not mixed well, at all...Bolland definitely pulls off some shaky mixes that are really apparent because most of the stuff he played was pretty hard techno....its much more difficult to get away with shaky mixing when yer playin' the harder stuff. Another thing, I understand that Stacey Pullen has plans on doing another mix cd sometime next year hopefully, once he finishes all the work on his album for Virgin/Science/Astralwerks. Anyone else have any info on this? bc

heh, well it would call in to question why they call it "DJ" kicks, vs. "records kick" or something a little closer to the facts. the andrea parker cd comes to mind as well, though i hate to have to mention it. eric
