its been a while - but here are our comments on some of the
better releases we have heard recently
X-Asp - Terra Firma 2 x 12"/CD (Rephlex Cat028)
X-Asp are Simon Powell and Paul Gulati , college chums of Mike
Paradinas , and together they have crafted a paradoxical collection
of tracks , opener "Terra Firma" sets the tone with a distorted kick drum
ushering in beautiful lilting strings that seem to move in slow motion ,
like a darker more sinister version of B12, X-Asp take a fractured look
at cold futuristic electronica but retain the raw human edge of Aphex
& Mu-Ziq at times disturbing othertimes deeply emotional , Paradinas
himself loads the tension into his mix of "Terra Firma" with stop/start
breaks and swelling string surges. 9 tracks 51 minutes.
CK - Compositons For Pets CD (Multiplex)
Thanking Herbie Hancock , Chet Baker & Playboy in the Linear notes! , CK
have
produced an album that defies catagorisation , like Hancocks 'Thrust' re -
invented with 90's freestyle sensibilities , this album moves through an
organic,
expansive world of ever changing elements , funky electronics provide the
base for
instruments to flit in and out of frame , tracks varying in tempo and mood
from late
night smoky downtempo sleazers to discordant phuture be-bop , if you are
looking
for something to stimulate those tired brain cells - check this out.
Drome - Dromed CD (German Kife)
If Can were wired into the digital age - this would be the result ,
Ntone stalwarts Drome take musical geners and twist and bend them
to fit their own unique vision, hiss laden abstract beat collages nestle
alongside blissed out electronica, funked up grooves and seriously
warped torch songs that come on like Portishead on serious drugs.
Highly recommended.
Kim Rapatti - Limited Editon 12"(Dum)
Anybody familiar with the Sakho label will have a fair idea of
what is contained within , dry , unprocessed mimimalism with grand
canyon size wide open spaces between the grooves , clicking hats and
stuttering flattened sub bass combine to create a hypnotic mantra
that rattles inside yer brain for days.
Herbert - Part 5 12"(Phono)
Matt (Wishmountain,Dr.Rockitt) Herbert takes us once more
into the blissful land of late night Larry Heard style deep house,
tinkling keys, smooth melodies and moody voiced samples , that
unmistakable vibe that sets this series apart from the rest and
made the Prescription camp sit up and take notice.
Krisp - Footnotes 12" (Love OD)
Story goes Derrick May loved this so much when he was over spinning in
Krisp creators native Norway that he asked for another copy for
Carl Craig, 2 unbelievably beautiful pieces of deep techno , funky as hell
but deeply emotional and uplifting , it is not often we all agree
on about something in the shop , but everyone here rates this as
one of the best singles we have heard so far this year.
Russ Gabriel - Fusion 12" (Planet E)
Funkadelic grooves from Ferox mainman , deep walking bass line,
shimmering wah wahs , swelling rhodes chords and twittering
moogs over slinky hazy downtempo beats , bringing to mind the
dreamy textures of Lonnie Liston Smith circa 'Voodoo Woman'
Spacetime Continumm - Remit Recaps 2 12" (Reflective 16)
Exceptional remix package , Jake Smith takes 'Kario' on a
deep voyage into drum n space , Robert Gordon injects some
sheffiled steel into "Vertigo" , Herbert dresses "Movement #2"
in silky smooth deep house and Velocette funk up "Iform"
phuture electronica style, 1st 300 come with holographic labels.
