trolling through the bins at the record store today i came across a cd on source records released in 1995 by ro 70 (roman flugel). though over, presumably, a year old, it's a refreshingly off-kilter collection of ambient-leaning electronica similar to some of the more beatoriented fax releases (not surprisingly) such as i.f. and some of david reeves' material, as well as some of the recent electro-jazz experiments of elfish echo, bisk, and atom heart (though decidedly darker and more, well, _german_ than those...). the disc also has a pretty interesting rhythmic dimension to it (though not nearly as complex as the latter three above) and, in my opinion, a wonderfully "composed" feel; the tracks really have sense of dynamism and progression that even the more experimental of "dance-based" electronic music often lacks. so what's up with this flugel guy? anybody offer any insight? will he be involved on any level with km20? does he have any other material out? thanksc

Yes, plenty. For starters, he's one half of Alter Ego, who have two releases on (gasp) Harthouse - but rest assured, it's very unlike Harthouse and similar enough, in fact, to the RO 70 disc. I just picked up another thing by him - the Sensorama album on Ladomat. Those of you who have the Hawtin mix CD on Moonshine will know (if you've paid any attention to the mix, which is admittedly hard given the stupid track indexing) that the Sensorama tracks on it are among the more brilliant ones. The album is a mix of brilliant minimal, yet atmospheric, house, and futuristic electro that's quite different from most of the electro being produced these days (most of which has a tendency to sound retro for its own sake, IMO.) Flugel hapens to be quite prolific actually. As well as putting out stuff on his own as RO 70, he also does collaborative stuff as Sensorama (for Ladomat) Alter Ego (for Harthouse), and recently did a very cool electro-techno 12" for Source with David Moufang. - Matthew
