i don't know how many people have tried to find out why richard uses aphex twin as a name....or if anyone knows... theres an interview in the new mixmag (with FSOL on the cover and inside) in which he says he is called the aphex twin because in 1968 his 'twin' brother (three years before richards birth)...also called richard james, died....the cover of the album is his 'grave' (a small bunch of flowers and a name plack (?)...and richard feels he knicked his identity... good interview as well, about two pages long.... paul

All in all this is a good edition of mixmag from an IDM point of view. There are interviews with Aphex, FSOL and T Power tucked between the covers. It recommends Tricky's new album very highly, but I don't know how seriously to take its review. Has anyone been able to hear this album yet, and can back this up? Thanks Mike On Fri, 27 Sep 1996, Paul.Spann wrote:

Well, I saw him this summer in Geneva (Switzerland) and was a bit disappointed. I assume alot fo teh stuff I didn't recognize was from the new album. If this *is* the case...I'm going to give this album a miss. ______________________________________________________________________________ Jason W. Salvador Dali used to say the same thing about a twin brother. He was also one for self-reinvention. Dali's "autobiography" is full of lies and misinformation - all in the name of audience manipulation and good fun, of course. I think that it (AT) probably has more to do with a piece of gear called the "Aphex Aural Exciter" and the fact that he (RDJ) originally worked with a (twin) partner... who knows? Maybe he's telling the truth - after all, he was quite forthright about the milkman's wife, no?

There's been an Aphex Aural Exciter sitting in a pawn shop in Vancouver for about 2 years.. nobody in the store knows what it does and I've never heard of it before. What the hell is this thing anyway? Cid.

They're a general-purpose signal processor of sorts, made for your average struggling home-studio musician who's yearning for that certain EuroCheese sheen. They apparently do add a bit of "sparkle" through a bit of hard-wired EQ'ing and thickening. Obviously, something Mr. James uses a lot. --Eric

Hmm. That's interesting. I always thought that the Aphex part came from the Aphex Aural Exciter (a very groovy audio processing unit) and that RDJ identified his as the "twin" of that technology... have read numerous James interviews explaining his moniker, , mostly wind ups, best one is , he started out as a duo with Tom Middleton (Global Communcation) , who was born on the same day as him - hence twin, the aphex bit comes from a referance to acid - PH - geddit? believe what you want sm@ 4th world uk *cutting edge mail order* http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/4thworld/
