i'm not sure why, but the pork label seems a little mysterious to me. i haven't seen any websites and/or web mentions and there's not much discussion here. yet, every pork release i've have is first rate. anyone want to venture a rec on their favorite puerco? i have fila brazilia ( old codes/new chaos), baby mammoths (10,000 years under the street), bullitnuts (which i haven't had a chance to listen to yet) and the comp, a taste of pork. i've seen some other titles, but don't have the background. pork lovers advice is appreciated. thanks, ra

I would recommend The Solid Doctor--Losing Patients Volume Four (Pork:032) One track (Holy Roller) is laid back lounge music. The other track (Land of Dope & Tory) is fabulous. Kind of dark progressive trance with a great rhythm to it. Both tracks can also be found on a CD called "How About Some Ether" (Pork:025) -----out-----------------------------* --Paul p. We love Pork so much we even wear the T - Shirts!!! I am glad to see this mob getting a mention , cos we think their stuff creams Mo Wax and all the other downtempo crews , simply through it's sheer diversity ( they don't just waive their cheque books and rope in rent a remixers as well) , plus the fact that most of the stuff is by one guy (Steve Cobby) , and they are from the town of Hull ,(a dull English seaport) makes it even more spectacular!!! recommended listening-in no particular order CD's Heights of Abraham - Ham Humidity (Pork 009) Solid Doctor - How About Some Ether compilation (Pork 25) Solid Doctor - Beats Means Highs (Pork 030) Filia Brazilia - Mess (Pork 031) Filia Brazilia - Maim that Tune (Pork 027) Heights of Abraham - Electric Hush (Pork 028) 12" Filia Brazilia - Losing Patients - Volumes 1 -4 (Pork 18/20/23/32) Solid Doctor - In the Offing (Pork 34) Horse Milk - They Milk Horses (Pork26) Filia Brazilia - A z and 2 L's (Pork 21) Bullitnuts - Feathered Up (Pork 29) Heights of Abraham - Sceinic vibe (Pork 022) Get porked up to the max!!!!! sm@ 4th world records uk http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/4thworld/

Did anyone listened to new signing to the Pork Recordings, called Akotcha ? I did, it's brilliant piece of work. I think this is their debut, 'Sound Burger' (pork 047CD , 1997). If you loved this year's Reflection "Errornormous World" , Luke Vibert "Big Soup", Uriel "Under Compulsion" or As One "Planetary Folklore" you're really like this one. Hey, there is even one track called 'Spy Movie' on it. A must have, 'little night music for all you night owls out there'. Every single track on CD is a gemm, specially 'Kobayashi Maru' , that I play when I DJ along with Push Button Objects "Trot" and Wagon Christ "Throbbing Puch" track. So, you get the point what is all about ? It's all about jazz, but some of you call it techno. :-) Can anyone give me some more information on Akotcha ? I really love all of Pork's output that I have, and I don't know why it isn't discussed here. I have 9 Pork CDs and all of them are exellent, specially : Fila Brazillia "Luck be a wierdo tonight" and Bullitnuts "Roast" Let's see some of your favourite Prok slices.... bok (meaning bye on Croatian) rob IMO if you were there originally and appreciated the stuff when it came out with the Zeitgeist of the time, then it will always hold a special place in your heart. On the other hand, if you come to it later as a newcomer, you may still appreciate its musicality or originality *for its time* but you may never truly live that music or have it engrained into your bloodstream the way you will with music that forms part of your growing and evolving experience. .........by IreneMcC

i agree. Pork has been a consistently good quallity label. My only BEEF with pork is that they only issue their full length works on CD. I wish they would also press the Albums on ALBUMS! Vinyl baby. All they press up on vinyl is singles from time to time. what a pisser, bennyblanco

Well, I too adore Pork, and my favorite album is 10,000 years beneath the street by Baby Mammoth. All of baby's efforts since haven't lived up to the brilliance of 10,000 years, but are nonetheless nice listens. Fila is one of the more brilliant acts out there today; they and Vibert are making the most interesting and innovative hip hop fusion shtuff that I have ever heard. pork rules!

No, but thanks for the mini-review! I didn't even know it had come out. How do you rate it against the other Pork stuff ie Fila's "Black Market Gardening", Baby Mammoths "10,000 Years" and Heights Of Abraham's "Electric Hush"?

I tried to discuss it a year or two back, and got a slight, but interesting, response.

Hmm. I'll have to get my hands on this one. I was led to believe it was one of their less interesting ones (shouldn't have payed any attention - all Fila I've heard so far has been smart).

"10,000 years" is the least favourite Pork CD I own, so I didn't investigate the others. It's still pretty good though..

Yeah, they're great, although I only own Black Market Gardening. I should get some others, definately. I love Uriel too. While I'm on the subject, did the Uriel LP come out on vinyl? What is the tracklisting? I have the Jazz Roux and Funk Attack Phenomenon 12"s which I adore... gb. -- /TheW i http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/lwtcdi/all/ f o L D o dlr WTC "Let's decompose and enjoy assembling!"

I haven't heard 1st one and 3rd one that you mentioned above, but I have Baby Mammoths "10,000 Years" , and Akotcha 'Sound Burger' is much better IMO. In fact it is my best Pork release so far, it's like Push Button Objects meets Uriel thing, funkeeeeeeeeee It's not that serious funk for a dirty world, get the point ? :-)

I have Heights of Abraham 'Humidity', I think it's their debut. It brilliant piece of work, easy listening, morning-lazy-get-up-jazzy thing. This one is released in 1993, and features that old tDR design, pretty much in vain of 1st N.O.W on Warp (warpCD4), of course I meant design, not music... I must get hold of Electric Hush CD. When is it released ? Can somebody point me out where I might find it...thanks

The second one is like an ambient Underworld, expect not as bad as that would be. The vocals are like that bloke from Underworld, but it's also got that Massive Attack kind of feel.

Well, the original was released probably about three years ago on Pork. It has a silver sleeve with a green square in the middle, so the silver is kind of like a border. It's quite distinctive. The Pork release isn't that hard to find over here, however there has recently been a re-release on ZTT who lisenced it afresh for '97. The copy I have is a promo of the ZTT release which I picked up very cheaply. I never saw a proper release, and if there was one, it wasn't very high profile. Maybe someone can confirm that it did actually come out? There is also a sampler 12" on ZZT with 4 tracks, which I think marks the first appearance on vinyl for the Electric Hush stuff. [Baby Mammoth]

I found "10,000 years" a little monotonous, not having the variation of the Fila release I've heard.

Yeah, it's top too. Only 9 tracks, but a great range of styles with that same Fila feel. Much better than all the remixes they were churning out at the time. gb. -- /TheW i http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/lwtcdi/all/ f o L D o dlr WTC "Let's decompose and enjoy assembling!"
