I have something quite interesting that some of you might want to get your hands on. It's not a bootleg in the strict sense, but a demo tape of unreleased Underworld songs from 1990 as Karl and the boys were trying to figure out how to incorporate acid house with their previous synth pop sound. It's sort of a blend of the old Underworld with the new and it has seven tracks. The tape is hand labeled (I think by Karl himself) and sorry, but I must keep its orgin a secret. This is a very unique item indeed, and I'm willing to entertain any offers people might have for trades of other IDM rarities. Please E-mail me if you're interested. Peace out, //"'' //''resh Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

I have a copy of a old domestic Underworld CD called "Under the Radar". Its the last LP before "DUBNOBASSWITHMYHEADMAN". I play it to anyone who says they like Underworld. It's some of the worst crap I've ever heard and I dont think that their new stuff is as good as it's hyped up to be. Boring, repetitive beats, cheesy synth lines and lame vocals = poopoo.

Well, I can't speak for "Under the Radar," but I must confess that I really like Underworld's 1989 album, "Change the Weather." Reminds me a little of early inxs. Tightly written songs with Hyde singing in a badly trained american accent. It's worth it just for the title track. Found it in a dollar bin the same day I found the Words & Music promo. You know I am a total idiot trainspotter so I would respond favorably if someone where to offer promo CD's of the new Aphex Twin EP & LP for the unreleased (and never to be released) Underworld tracks. Seems like a ridiculously good trade for whoever should be willing... //"'' //''resh Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

The original poster's assertion is correct to some degree. That old album does register somewhat high on the Faecal-matter Scale. The vocals *are* lame for the most part. But . . . The respondent is also right to draw attention to some of the Good Things that Underworld have brought forth into this world, such as Pearls Girl. To state that they are pioneers, however, seems a rather large claim, since all they were essentially doing was coll-ecl-ecting various strands in the air at the time (techno/electro/breakbeat/house/dub/cheese/biscuits/sub-TearsforFears "singing" . . . ) and cobbling it together into a sonic pizza. Long on crust, short on topping . . . alan/beyondthebristolsound ________________________________________________________

I think Goethe said that everything has been thought of before -- the trick is to think of it again. The other eternal rule that comes into play is music is based on theft (not borrowing, if done right it's theft) and recombination of previously-used elements. --Mark __ http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome "The fact their parents have separated doesn't disturb the children. Well, to continue in the dork-retentive fashion that this list so generously fosters, it was Plato's idea that the trick is to remember instead of "learning". Sorry to fall under your influence. i'll forward this to alt.philosophy.plato HA

Hmm. Well, I liked Underworld when they were making cheesy synthpop and I like them now. I don't see why the two have to be mutually exclusive, but whatever turns your crank (or doesn't) . . . -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo)
